October Monitorama!

Hi folks,

After the success of Logging Solutions and a request from the audience we've decided to do a "Monitorama" for October.

This meeting is an open call for people to demo how they monitor their systems. You will have 15 minutes to present to the group. The end goal is for the audience to leave with an understanding of monitoring, and the different tools they can use to monitor production code.

If you are interested in presenting, please send us an email at [masked] or comment below with your topic and name and we'll add you to the agenda.

Lineup:

-Datadog (James Wickett)

-Rackspace Cloud Monitoring (Justin Gallardo)

-NewRelic (Karthik)

-Compuware APM (Michael Masterson)

-Zabbix (Greg Swift)

-Copperegg (Mike Raab and John Wyles)

-Copperegg- Situational Awareness (Boyd Hemphill)

-Operating Monitoring Systems at Scale with Opensource tools (Anand)

-Riverbed APM (Peco Karayanev)

-Zenoss (Alex Corley)

Talking points (guidelines):

- Introduce yourself, and where you work

- What do you use

- Why do you like it?

- What are the features you love in the tool

- What are some features you are missing

- Success stories that you have seen in the org because of monitoring/ the tool etc

- Other monitoring solutions you looked at, but didn't pick

- Whatever else you think is relevant

- Q&A

For the video next time, put the screen in the foreground and speaker in the background. Can't read the slides at all.

    • Karthik

I totally agree with y'all. I'll be getting speaker slides after this, but we didn't have a long enough extension cord to display the screen. Sorry y'all, we'll do better next time.

Will there be remote viewing options? I am not going to be able to attend physically.

Hey guys, if all the technology co-operates, we were planning on doing a live google hangout during the event. Thus, it should stream live, or at least have a recording. If we do a hangout, I'll make sure to post the link on here.

is the Google hangout still happening?

Unfortunately I won't be able to attend due to last minute travel. Trying to find backup for slot but no one confirmed yet.

As some of you know I'm quite vested in monitoring. If possible I would like to have the presenters talk about how the features of whatever they use have actually brought value (or not).

Too many of the monitoring presentations have been about showing pretty colors, graphs and huge amount of data. But few have shown the value actually seen by the ops/devops team.

Also, has anyone in the group used Stackdriver?

Folks: we have an opening for a nagios talk; our current speaker had a conflict. Also, we're still happy to have anyone else who'd like to present on their monitoring tool of choice! Just reply back to the thread...

I would like to talk about: 'Operating Monitoring Systems at Scale'. It would focus on how open source tools can be used to build a fail safe, multi region monitoring system.

      Y'all are in!

      September 20, 2013

    • Karthik

Gents- @Boyd is going to also cover CopperEgg from a different perspective. Take a look at his comment above if you haven't already :)

      October 1, 2013

  • Boyd H.

I can do a quick CopperEgg Demo from the perspective of walking in to a place with > 100 machines and needing some situational awareness. It does look like John & Mike are going to talk a bit more in depth already though.

    September 21, 2013

    • Karthik

Sorry Boyd- I've been slow in responding; you're on! Since it is a 2nd CopperEgg demo, I'd probably cover your usecase, and not worry about the general stuff. Looking forward to it!
