National Day of Civic Hacking is a nationwide day of action to bring together civic leaders and community organizations to tackle some our toughest challenges. Our local event hosted by Code for Denver will focus on Criminal Justice Reform. Activities will include mapping out the journey of a person to get their record sealed.
WHAT IS THE SPECIFIC WORK THAT WILL BE DONE?
We are working to create a complete understanding of how people with convictions in Colorado can have their records sealed. This is a first step to find the friction points for users in the process that can be addressed with either technology or process.
WHY IS THIS ISSUE WORTH SOLVING?
Sealing your record can help remove barriers to housing, jobs, education, and other opportunities. In some cases, there are records that can be sealed for convictions that are no longer a crime.
Our primary idea is to create a journey map for the record sealing process. This will then be used in an ongoing project at Code for Denver's regular project night. We also hope that this artifact will be useful for our partners in advancing legislation, creating reports, and understanding how they can influence the process to be as easy as possible.
