Mementos & Metaphors Poetry Workshop- Session 4

In the month of April, instead of a traditional seminar, we are celebrating National Poetry Month BIG TIME! Every Monday in April starting April 8th, David A Romero will be at the Ovitt Family Community Library to present a workshop called "Mementos and Metaphors: Poems of Family and Identity". The workshop consists of four classes, each session building upon the other, aimed at helping workshop participants to connect to their roots while creating original poetry. Guest poets will be featured at select meetings.

In this session, we will have a mini-slam featuring the participants from the past 3 sessions. You will then learn how to find venues to perform in, how to get featured at those venues, and how to compete in slams. David will be joined by Treesje Powers.

David A. Romero is the author of Diamond Bars: The Street Version and Fuzhou. He has been featured at universities and spoken word venues across the Southland, receiving praise from writers and poets such as the Tony Award winner Poetri and the West Coast Editor of Rock and Rap Confidential, Lee Ballinger. He teaches his signature workshops in local schools, colleges, and detention centers, helping young students to produce their own anthologies. David received his Bachelor’s Degrees from the University of Southern California as a double major in Film and Philosophy.

Treesje Powers is a founding member and “First Lady” of LionLike MindState, a poetry venue in the Pomona Arts Colony. She competed two years in a row at the National Poetry Slam as part of the Empire MindState Slam Team, helping her team to rank 2nd in the nation in 2010. She was also part of the 2012 Elevated National Slam Team. Treesje was recently featured on Season 2 of Verses & Flow on the TV One network. She holds a Masters Degree in School Psychology from Loyola Marymount University.

This event is supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from the James Irvine Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Friends of the Ontario City Library.

As always, this event is free. All sessions of the Mementos and Metaphors Poetry Workshop will take place in the Storytime Room of the Ovitt Family Community Library.

All four of these workshops have inspired me beyond belief and have revealed to me a new light on the art of poetry with passion and emotion.
