The Black Count by Tom Reiss

The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo (Pulitzer Prize for Biography) Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2012: Generations have been enthralled by Alexandre Dumas' characters, especially the wronged hero in The Count of Monte Cristo and the daring swordsmen in The Three Musketeers. Yet few realize that these memorable characters were inspired by Dumas' father, General Alex Dumas, the son of a French count and a black Haitian slave. Tom Reiss brings the elder Dumas alive with previously unpublished correspondence and meticulous research, providing the context necessary to understand how exceptional his life as a mulatto general in a slave-owning empire truly was. From single-handedly holding a bridge in the Alps against 20 enemies to spending years held captive in a fortress, Alex Dumas is a fascinating character that not even his son's vivid imagination could have dreamed up. --Malissa Kent

Yes, we'll pick the books for the next six months. I haven't had time to get them on amazon yet. Still since each month has a genre the voting should be pretty easy. I'll have a list of the books placed in each genre that I'll pass out.

Hi, Trisha - Are we going to decide at tomorrow's meeting on the books for the next six months? If so, will you have a list for us? I don't see anything posted on the Amazon page. Thanks!

Sorry, I'm missing again! I'm actually having a baby next month! Hopefully this summer I can make it a few times. I've been enjoying these book selections though. Have fun!

Sorry guys. Can't make it. Wish I could -- I really enjoyed this book. I found it fascinating to learn so much about what life was like in France at the time we in the U.S. were dealing with Supreme Ct. decision in Dred Scott. Also, I knew Napoleon was not a nice person but he comes across as down right maniacally evil.

Hope to see you all next time.
