Cooking with Obstacles. Sustainable Education and the German Refugee Community

Join Joela Jacobs of the University of Arizona to learn about the cultural orientation programs that popped as part of the Willkommenskultur after more than one million refugees came to Germany in 2015. Through these programs, new arrivals learn about the German language and culture. Several initiatives focus on environmental education, offering courses about the recycling system or inviting refugees to garden and cook with locals. Jacobs will discuss the successes and failures of some of these programs and what they tell us about German culture, environmentalism and refugee experiences.
