The history of Colorado Product has evolved much like the technology startups its founders and leadership team have built their careers working on. The Boulder Product Meetup was founded in 2010 by Adam Tornes, David Hoffman, and Alex Haar; three product managers relatively early in their careers and lacking deep roots in the Boulder area. All three led the Product Management function at their respective startup companies and upon meeting, learned that none of them knew more than 1 other PM in the Boulder area, despite the plethora of tech startups and mainstays in the area. Given these factors, the trio started the Boulder Product Meetup with two specific objectives in mind: 1) facilitate professional development through peer conversations and formalized learning opportunities and 2) build a strong network of product professionals in the Boulder area.
Over time, leadership of the Boulder Product Meetup has evolved due to relocations, but those original objectives still held true. In fact, the Meetup had found real “market traction” in 2014 and as membership in the organization and attendance at events grew, the team decided there was opportunity to have take the organization to the next level. In September 2014 at a Denver Startup Week event sponsored and run by the Boulder Product Meetup, it became clear there was opportunity for the organization to have a broader reach. Thanks to the size of the Denver tech community, tremendous turnout for the event, and feedback that nothing similar existed in Denver, we decided expansion of the meetup to Denver was a natural progression, but we still wanted to do more…
We’re not Product Management experts – nor do we pretend to be – we’re successful Product professionals that are rooted in, invested in and are passionate about the Colorado tech community and the vision/mission of Colorado Product. Places like Silicon Valley/SF, NYC and Boston have established themselves as hubs of technology over the last decade plus, in large part due to the number of startups and established tech companies in the areas and the rich engineering talent they possess. In fact the rise of these technology meccas is similar to the growth of Boulder, Denver, and Colorado in general’s growing tech and startup scenes, that are just a step behind. However, none of these cities have established themselves as the hub for product management talent… until Colorado Product!
