Car camping near Homestake Creek and Res. between Redcliff and Leadville. There are lots of nice dispersed camping spots along Homestake Cr. Road.
You need to be in contact with me (Parnelli Pete) by Wednesday evening to make arrangements to meet us.
This is about a 2 hour HWY, plus dirt road drive from Denver.
Lots of trails into Holy Cross Wilderness Area including Missouri Lakes and Fancy Lake.
This will be dispersed camping, as in not at a campground. No picnic tables or restrooms though there are some outhouses at CG's and a trailhead fairly nearby.
Homestake Creek Road is off Hwy 24 between Redcliff and Leadville. It is a dirt road suitable for passenger cars (with a couple of extensions to higher reaches requiring high clearance). Along the road are many campsites. And several trailheads into Holy Cross Wilderness Area. Including Missouri Lakes and Fancy Lake trailhead at the end of the passenger car portion.
Directions: Link to Forest service info on Gold Park Campground, we'll be fairly near to it.
There are 3 ways to get there from Denver all taking about the same amount of time. Homestake Road (Forest Road 703) leaves Hwy 24 about 3 miles south of Redcliff less than 1 mile south of Hornsilver Campground.
1) Vail Pass to Shrine Pass Road (Vail Pass rest area exit) which is a bumpy passenger car appropriate road. About 30 to 40 minutes to Redcliff from Vail Pass Rest area exit. Pretty and bumpy ride. At Redcliff go South (labeled east) on Hwy 24 about 3 miles to Homestake Cr. Road.
2) Past Vail on I-70 to Minturn exit. Then Hwy 24 towards Leadville. Past Redcliff about 3 miles to Homestake Creek Road.
3) I-70 to Copper Mountain and South on Hwy 91 (Fremont Pass) towards Leadville. Just before Leadville go north on Hwy 24 (Tennessee Pass) towards Redcliff and Vail. (I think this is the fastest way by 5 or 10 minutes). If you get to Hornsilver CG turn around and it is less than a mile back up towards Leadville.
Finding the group:
Easiest is to carpool and/or caravan from Wooly Mammoth lot at 12:30 on Thursday. If you cannot do that, I'll be giving out info on how to find us when I have your contact info. It will involve my putting out surveyor tape and leaving messages at set locations. You won't know how to find us unless you have rsvp'd and we have had communication beyond your rsvp.
Currently no campfire restrictions in place at this location. Bring some firewood if you can.
