Holiday Cookie Swap

  • Dec 15, 2013 · 2:00 PM
  • Heather's House

You are invited to our group’s first annual Holiday Cookie Swap!

A shortcut is much needed during the holiday season! Let’s spend an afternoon together as we sit-back, get to know each other, and enjoy each other's conversation. Instead of spending hours in the kitchen making a slew of different holiday sweets, this is a great opportunity to share our hard work with each other, and walk away with a variety of goodies at the same time.

So here’s how the Cookie Swap works:
1. Mix up 4 dozen (2 or 3 batches) of your favorite vegan holiday treat (cookie, brownie, candy, fudge, etc.).
2. Email the recipe to Heather (if you have time) with the vegan goodie you are bringing. She will include it in a small recipe book for everyone who attends the meetup to take home.
3. Show up with those goodies on December 15th ready to relax and have a great afternoon.
4. Warm up with some festive drinks (tea, coffee, vegan eggnog, wine).
5. Be ready to sample! One dozen of everyone’s treats will be used to enjoy and taste. Savory snacks will be provided too!
6. After sampling the selection of goodies, you will leave with a variety of THREE dozen different holiday treats in the container you brought your own goodies in.
7. You will have met new people from the group. Newcomers…we can’t wait to meet you!
8. As it gets closer to the meetup, indicate in the comments section what you are bringing so that we don’t end up with 10 different types of fudge!! (Please post by December 8th)
9. This is a social event as much as it is a food event!

****Directions to Heather’s house will be emailed two days before the event.****

Becky, those Compost cookies sound yummy..........and interesting. Ellie, I'm impressed! JL, that's funny about recently learning the real name for Mexican Wedding Cookies - a bow to Uncle Wayne! :-)

    My recipe: VEGAN COMPOST COOKIES

Google vegan chocolate chip cookie recipes and save one on your computer.

Get stymied by obscure ingredients list and delete it.

Dig out your old recipe from your recipe pile stacked in the cabinet in the back bedroom.

Compare it to Nestle Tollhouse recipe (non-vegan) and 7 different recipes.

Cobble together a recipe that uses coconut oil instead of butter and applesauce instead of eggs and adds xantham gum (um, okay).

Google “Compost Cookies” from one of your favorite cookie places in NYC called Momofuku Milk Bar.

Decide to add vegan butterscotch chips, graham crackers, rolled oats, ground coffee, potato chips and pretzels into the mix to make the new, amazing, everyone will love them: Vegan Compost Cookies!!!

Pat yourself on the back for being so brilliant!

Forget about adding vegan butterscotch chips and vegan graham crackers when you can’t find them at Whole Foods...

Heather -- I'll send you full version...

I'd love to be with you, but this holiday time is full of family demands. Please have all the fun you can stand with every cookie. I've been vegetarian since 1976 and organic vegan since 1985 -- no sugar, white flour or salt.

I am planning on bringing ginger snaps.

I can really only make one cookie, so I'm claiming it now! Pumpkin chocolate chip cookies :) This is so great, I've always wanted to do this!

Wish I could come - sounds like a fun time. Say hi to your mom for me Heather -- bet her cookies will be exceptionally delicious if they're anything like the fruit pie she made. ;-)

    • Heather

Hi Betsy! I'll definitely pass on the hello to my mom.

I'd like to come, but I'm gluten free. Is anybody else? Or would I be the only one bringing gluten free cookies??

Okay, just let me know! I like to experiment with gluten free, but if you're not able to come it'll be easier to make a quadruple batch of regular. Tho I don't know if I have a bowl that large... ;)

      December 7, 2013

    • Heather

Hi Holly, I'm sorry you can't make the cookie swap! I know at least two of the recipes are gluten free, and others can be modified to be gluten free. I'll email you a copy of the recipes next week when I have them all compiled.

Looking forward to our cookie swap! I will either make Mexican Hot Chocolate Snickerdoodles or a Peppermint Patty Bar. My mom will be joining us and she is bringing both a date cookie and a lime crescent cookie.

I think I'm going to bring palmiers -- Heather, I'll send you the recipe just now. I can't wait for this event, and have already marked Monday, 16 December, as an official 'sugar coma' day. :)

I'm so sad to miss this, I love to bake! Can I get the recipe book anyway? That would be great to get some new ideas and bring vegan treats a little closer to my I-need-my-Schnitzel-every-day-family.

    November 17, 2013

    • JL F.

      Oh no! We'll miss you!

      November 20, 2013

    • Heather

Hi Manuela! I will email you a copy.

      November 21, 2013

I [hope] I'm bringing Mexican Wedding Cookies - though I was 40 years old before I learned that was the actual cookie name. Growing up they were called "Uncle Wayne's Cookies" because they were his favorite. I don't bake, so wish me luck!
