** NEW DATE** Riding Skills Tune-Up - Dust The Rust Off!

We have permission again this year to use a large private parking lot just one traffic light away from I-270. When you see the sign for the church turn in that entrance and follow the road straight back. It will curve to the left and then continue straight and go beyond the first parking lot and beyond the building to the second parking lot.

So come on out Saturday May 5th at 11:00 am for a great group riding skills refresher to kick off the 2012 riding season!

FYI:

I am hoping the lot is large enough to have each of the four corners set up with one or two skills and the lengths set up with cone weave and the other side set for slow speed/reg speed straight line riding.

Plans are:

Slow speed straight ride, 3 to 5mph riding as slow as you can, keeping the bike upright and moving without losing control and a foot going down.(you should be in 2nd gear)

Straight line with stop/ starts. (practice the correct way to stop your bike)

Cone weave (counter steering) normal run and run one handed.

Double U turn set

Obstacle avoidance (swerve to the right or left)

Sharp turns (moving and from a complete stop)

Braking in a curve to a stop

Straight line braking

Riding over an obstacle (2x4)

Figure Eight in a box

We have 40 bikes attending. That is a lot so we might have to take turns and have some bikes side lined at times. We will see how this pans out! So,if you are sidelined for a bit, you can help with the sets or watch and critique others.

None of the excercises are rated as expert riding. These exercises are to sharpen/fine tune your daily riding. Slow manuevers are the most difficult to master, but you need them "mastered" for the crowded parking lots and congested traffic on the highways.

As you know, you cannot critique your own riding, so if a suggestion comes your way, take it constructively and consider what is being said to help improve your riding skillset. There will be all skill sets attending and none of us are "perfect" riders. We all aquire bad habits with anything we do, so keep an open mind, have fun and hopefully learn something new or just sharpen that skill!

I hope everyone jumps in to offer suggestions to each other and if you are unsure on how to correct a problem with your riding or not sure how to do something, ask about it so you can practice it and overcome it!

This practice is our group practicing their skill sets. None of us are "certified" ride instructors, we are using our knowledge, wisdom, accomplishments and failures to help each other improve our riding abilities.

See you Saturday!

I felt this was an important meetup to kick off the riding season. I was able to test the limits of my new bike in a controlled environment and enhance my skills. Thanks Diane for being my first passenger. I'm looking forward to a safe riding season with everyone.

Diane (and Tom!) did another outstanding riding skills course - the best yet (our third year). Seven stations kept everyone moving. Met lot's of new riders to our li'l ole group!

Even for those of us AARP members (Aged Adults Riding Proud) it was great to focus and zone in on our skill sets!

What a great opportunity to practice your skills and to see where improvements are needed. I wish we could do this more than once a year. Thanks to Diane for all the work and for the organizers who helped put this together.

good turnout considering the high chance of rain. Dusting off the rust is ALWAYS a good way to start the riding season. Met some new friends!

What a great day! We had a good turnout, got some practice in and met some new members! I needed the practice and I think I could use some more! :) I got to try riding with a passenger for the very first time! It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be! Thanks Susan for being my passenger! Oh, and I found my "lost" drivers backrest.

Another great meetup with this great group of people. I found my skills were not dusty, but rusty!

I was pleasantly surprised how many "skills" I was able to practice. Thank you very much, Diane, for putting this together.
Andrew, be sure to tell the church, THANKS!

Diane, One more "thank you" for making decision to delay todays' meet. Avoidable and unnecessary risk is an option I vote for every time. See you next Saturday!!

I am so glad you changed it to May 5th. I would not have gone today. High only 48 and rain. Nope. It would not have been fun at all and even though I have been riding for the last month in good weather, on my own, brushing the rust off for group riding in slippery conditions could be dangerous. Thanks for the postponement.

I rode to work every day during the winter in the snow and freezing rain, so warm rain doesn't bother me so much hahah

Been watching it too. Two weeks ago I completed the Rider's Edge course at AD Farrow and it rained all day Saturday. Wasn't horrible but not the most fun I ever had on a bike. The quick stop on wet pavement had me a little nervous, but it turned out fine. Hope we can still get this in Saturday, I am looking forward to meeting folks and practicing.

I am watching the weather forecast, not looking too promising. As it gets closer to Saturday we might have to postpone/cancel.... Pray it is a go! :)

I would like to have some volunteers to help chalk out the practice runs and place cones so we will be ready to go at 11:00 am. This back parking lot is huge and we can set up quite a few practice challenges! Anyone willing to come an hour early at 10:00 am to help set up?
