Baring Head reserve - small mammal monitoring

Friends of Baring Head are organising volunteers to undertake monitoring of small mammals on Baring Head, to allow Greater Wellington to make decisions on what pest control is needed. Come along and help to monitor populations of lizards, wetas and other critters.

This is done by putting inked cards in tunnels, with a meat based bait in the middle of the card. The animals have to walk across the ink to get to the food, and on their way out leave footprints that can be used to find out what animals are there (including native animals like weta and geckos).

There are eight lines. Three do not require any uphill walking (river flats and the beach), so the unfit very welcome. Two involve fun scrambling through divaricating scrub on steep slopes, so the adventurous also catered for. Most lines can be combined with a walk to the lighthouse to enjoy the heritage and fantastic views of Wellington.

This event will happen regardless of weather, unless it is going to pour with rain during the following night and keep all the little animals in their beds (decision made by Greater Wellington). We have managed to provide good weather for the last three monitoring days and will try hard this time. But come equipped for rain, wind and cold, just in case. It can be a very windy site!

You'll need boots or strong walking shoes for most lines. Trousers or gaiters, and long sleeved shirt advisable for working in scrub. Bring water and your lunch.

The process takes around 3 hours plus travelling time, so you should be back in Wellington around 2pm (unless you want to go to the beach, do some rock climbing, mountain bike around the coast, or do other exciting things while out there).

Bring lunch and drinks and snacks. Also please note that there are no toilets so you will need to go behind the bushes!

If you have been on a previous day, we will particularly welcome you back, so we have more people who know the process and where the lines are. But there will be full training on the day, and the more the merrier.

We will be carpooling so please meet at 9am outside the front of the railway station. Offers to drive most welcomed!!!!!!!!

Sorry for flaking. I get so much meetup junk mail that the reminder must have gotten lost in the shuffle. Trying yet AGAIN to get my meetup email settings right. Sorry folks.

I think you're right, Spencer; I reckon this was pretty cruise-y, especially compared to the planting day. =) Thanks for organizing it. Kevin and I really enjoyed ourselves.

    Yip, I'm still in.
Though I have no transport so am hoping for space somewhere.
If Greater Wellington do cancel this how much notice do they give? Is the info just posted on this site?

Yep, Kevin and I are going. Julie R had to back out, so we can drive two people if more people turn up at the train station tomorrow without rides.
