Live near Porirua and want to help keep the Porirua Harbour clean and green? Come along and help clean it up as part of Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week.
The Harbour is a critically important area in the Lower North Island, as the largest saltwater estuary, and home to dozens of bird species, fish and other wildlife.
Cleaning up the Harbour is the single most important thing that we can all do. Why? Because the Harbour is so vital to our way of life. All our rivers and streams empty into the Harbour and it is home to kai moana. Unfortunately, because the Harbour hasn't been looked after for so long, it's not currently safe to eat food from there.
Wouldn't it be great if one day, we can go down to the Harbour and get some cockles, kina, mussels and some fresh fish for dinner? Well, we can - but we need your help. Play your part in participating in the annual Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week from 15 September. Meet at the Grassy area on the Harbour behind Porirua Pak'n'Save Sunday 15 September from 10.30am (low tide between 11.30 - 12.30) rain or shine. Bring gumboots and old clothes. Keep Porirua Beautiful will supply bags, gloves, hot water, tea and coffee. BBQ after the event unless it's raining.
