This is a community for those who have an academic background in religion(s) and would like to engage in discussion informed by their knowledge of the history, philosophy, or art of religions. You may have acquired this knowledge during undergraduate or graduate study (it may or may not have been your major) or at a seminary. You may have taken courses in comparative religion; history of religions; a world religion like Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, shamanism, or lesser known faith such as Zoroastrianism or Taoism; art history; or cultural anthropology. After college or university, you may have continued to stay interested in religion and religious ideas, perhaps through reading and attending lectures. You might also have developed a spiritual practice, such as meditation.
Would you like to meet with others with a similar background, to converse, exchange ideas, share understanding or insights? We will have meetups now and then in Seattle to converse over a meal at a restaurant; or to attend a relevant lecture, workshop, or cultural event, such as an art exhibit, musical concert, play, or dance performance. Group members can also suggest meetups and invite members to join--for coffee/tea in their neighborhood, to go to an event with a religious theme, etc.
Perhaps we could organize an occasional retreat at a suitable place in the Pacific Northwest where members can focus on a chosen activity--whether it's being in nature, doing your own spiritual practice, reading and discussion, or a combination. The Group Organizer also has a travel Meetup group (called "Travel Companions 40+"), and those who are interested could join the trips that have a spiritual aspect.
By joining this group, you accept be courteous and respectful in your dialogues with other members, which presupposes being interested in other traditions and open to other points of view.
People of all ages are encouraged to join. Those who have lived longer and studied and thought more often have more wisdom to impart.
This is a more private Meetup group in that membership needs to be approved by the Group Organizer; members' profiles and meetup locations can be viewed only by members; suggested meetups from members need to be approved before being announced; and only limited meetup information is visible to non-members. These settings provide a measure of privacy, security, and safety for group members. The Group Organizer has wide ranging/global interests in religions and spirituality.
Please note: the Group Organizer will not be available from mid-October to mid-November 2016. Any membership requests during this time will be reviewed afterwards. Apologies for the inconvenience.
