What we're about

If you are looking for a meditation experience with more energy and active, intentional breathing, this is it! Whether you have never meditated before, are just starting out, are curious about this practice, want to try it, have dabbled in it, or have been meditating for years, join us - ALL are welcome and encouraged! SOMA breathwork combines the best of a calming visualization with rhythmic breathing techniques (pranayama) and "entrainment" music to raise vibrational energy and improve heart coherence. When done as a group, the positive effects are even more amplified. Read on to find out more about the healing advantages of SOMA breathwork meditation.

I am the founder of Connected Breaths, and am the first certified SOMA breathwork instructor in the Detroit/Southeast Michigan area, as well as one of the first in the state of Michigan and in the United States. I am located in the Ferndale/Royal Oak area and will be hosting breathwork events and workshops throughout the metro Detroit area, as well as other locations in Michigan. Visit my website (www.connectedbreaths.com) and join the facebook page too (fb.me/connectedbreathsmeditation) if you want all the ways to keep in touch. And be sure to join the meetup if you'd like to find out when events are happening!

SOMA Overview:
SOMA is a complete holistic system of breathwork techniques. There is no one size fits all, and SOMA takes into account everyone is different and requires different breathing techniques depending on their needs. SOMA is based on the core pranayama yoga techniques that have the most scientific evidence to support their function. It is inspired by the most revered Pranayama Kumbhaka technique and the Rig Veda, that is the basis of modern day Hinduism and the Vedic philosophy that yoga originates from. It is also inspired by the breathwork technique that is the core of the Wim Hof Method, created by Wim Hof; the work of Dr Prakash Malshe, an Indian doctor based near Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga who uses pranayama and yoga to treat his patients; and Swami Ambikananda Saraswati, who has one of the most popular yoga schools in the UK that is based on the earliest recorded traditional yoga practices.

Learning and practicing the 5 core breathwork techniques of SOMA can lower your blood pressure, reduce inflammation, potentially activate stem cells and repair cells, promote growth of good bacteria, and cleanse the bowels.

All of the techniques inside of SOMA Breathwork can be used to help with a variety of chronic health issues that are triggered by chronic emotional stress, autoimmune disease, metabolic diseases, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and more.

Some of the areas where SOMA Breathwork may be beneficial:
• Lose weight
• Increase energy
• Access more creative states of mind
• Heal quicker
• Get deeper sleep
• Improve digestion
• Live longer
• Improve mood
• Reduce anxiety/panic
• Reduce inflammation
• Clear asthma, congestion, sinus problems

All techniques are designed to be a complementary addition to existing treatment and not a replacement for them. While SOMA Breathwork is considered safe, it is always best to seek medical advice before doing any alternative holistic practice.

Because some of the breathwork includes elements of intermittent hypoxic training (IHT), people with the following conditions should not participate:
- High blood pressure, epilepsy, heart conditions
- Pregnant women
- Acute somatic and viral diseases
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD-II and COPD-III)
- Chronic diseases with symptoms of decompensation or terminal illness
- Individual intolerance of oxygen insufficiency
- Cancer, unless IHT is prescribed by a doctor
- People with pacemakers or heart arrhythmias, unless treatment is under direct medical supervision
