Connecticut Lasso ride

Updated ride info below:

Sorry but I just have to get this out of the way. This is a zero alcohol ride for the safety of all riders involved. Thanks for understanding.

Google maps puts the milage at roughly 320 miles from Starbucks in Norwalk (the one north of the Merritt). Add to that miles you'll put on getting to and from your starting places. Since it's mostly backroads and smaller state highways we're looking at roughly 8 hours of saddle time + your miles + gas/breaks/food. Figure we'll stop roughly every 2 hrs for quick stretches, gas as needed and have lunch and possibly a dinner stop at the end. I'm not one for extended food breaks and since we'll have a bit under 10 hrs of daylight (7am sunrise & 4:30pm sunset) the lunch stop will be under 30 minutes, 45 max.

Please wear appropriate gear for the weather. Predicted temperature below 40 with a likelihood of rain/snow above 50% cancels ride. Recent rain/snow with a predicted high temp below 35 cancels ride.

=,( <----This is that feeling of sadness when you show up for a meetup and no one else shows up. This is also the face of a noob rider that must learn that just because its sunny and the roads are clear here doesn't mean the same for the roads up north. Youth and lack of experience got the best of me on this one guys Lol! PS: Please cancel this ride so no one else is mislead. Thank you.

      Hi RJ,

This has been the longest winter since 1960. I was ready to ride too but when i woke up and saw 28dgs till around 3pm and flurries
I called it quits.i was so psyched for this ride. Heated clothes from socks to my helmet won't keep me warm in this weather. Also bugged my mechanic to install my satelite radio before the ride.
Maybe the bike blessing in Norwalk on April 6th wil be better.

I agree with Trav. Temps wont be in the 40s in southern ct till later in the day which means it will be even colder up north w/possibility of black ice and flurries. Not a safe mix! Damn Puxtawny Phil lied again!! WE WANT SPRING!!!!

Temp at 8 am will be 28 degrees. I will have to decline due to the possibility of ice.

Ok guys. Riders are dropping off like flies. I understand why. A buddy that lives north of kent told me they've been getting a decent amount of frost on the roads at night. Saturday's high temp doesn't look like its going to be high enough to guarantee it'll burn off. So I'm going to elect to cancel the ride. We'll do it in the spring for sure. Otherwise, safe riding everyone and happy thanksgiving.

It does look a whole lot better, unfortunately I'm not free to ride that day. Sunday looks even colder. I'm good with cold weather riding so long as there's traction. The forecast seems to be changing daily so let's see how it develops as we get closer.

Keeping an eye on the weather. As it stands now looks like 30 to 40% chance of rain/snow throughout the areas of the ride with a low and high temp of 24 and 42. If we get sub freezing temps predicted at start of ride we'll have to evaluate a possible cancel for safety reasons, north of Kent can get a decent amount of frost on shaded corners without rain/snow.

Looks like we have a few riders who can't do the ride because of the early start. Would a bit of a later start, say closer to 9 to 9:15 work? Don't mind changing the route and distance a bit to accommodate everyone. We'll still get in a full days ride. Let me know.

Hi Sam, thanks again, for arranging this ride. Just to verify.. the ride will start at 9:30am and folks will meet at Starbucks on Rt 7. We may have to ask Jen to update the overall invite as the organizer. I will probably drop off the ride early, but certainly would be interested in the entire route in the spring / summer months.

Hi JB. Glad to do it as I'm sure there's plenty of folks wanting to get in a nice long ride before winter really sets in. No problem peeling off early as you need. To clarify, we'll meet at Starbucks on Rt 7 at 8, with a kickstand up time of 8:30 or earlier as soon as everyone shows. I know it's early but we need to try to maximize the available daylight we have for the ride.

      November 19, 2012

    • JB

Hi again, Sam. I will regretfully need to decline my RSVP. I totally understand that the early hour is to cover the long ride; however, I will not be able to get to Starbucks by 8:30am. I wish you and everyone a great Thanksgiving Holiday and a safe ride on Saturday! I look forward to meeting everyone on our first ride in the Spring!

    Update and clarification:
Weather looks on the cooler side for Sat but with low probability for rain/snow. I'm hoping the thanksgiving day warmth will carry over a bit to Saturday. Ride start and meeting place:
Meeting is still Starbucks on Rt 7 in Norwalk. Meeting time is 8am with the latest kickstand up time of 8:30. It's a long ride and we can use all the daylight we can muster in late November. We should have plenty of time to take in the sights, have breaks, get fuel and food so long as we leave on time. Maintenance and safety:
Please do a quick check of all our fluids, battery charge, tire pressure and condition before the ride. Bring whatever tools you might need that's specific for your bike. I will be bringing metric tools, 12V tire inflator, tire plug kit, and jumper cables. Let's hope we won't need any of them. Dress warm and shielded from the wind and this will be a very pleasant ride for you no matter the ambient temp. For those with heated gear, don't forget to bring extra fuses. Looking f

Good news and bad news. Bad news is that my mechanic called me and told me that the parts for my bike won't be in until the 29th of this month so Im not going to make the ride. Good news is that as soon as they come in, my bike is first priority for service so Im guessing it will be ready by december 5th. Hopefully the weather will still be good enough to get at least 1 ride in before the snow hits. Im just praying. And yes this info isn't really necessary but I like to keep people informed. Have a great ride guys and stay safe....and warm.
