Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge

This is a beautiful spot in Ridgefield, WA. It has a Native American plank-house, plus a trail to a lake full of wapato. Native Americans once dug the wapato bulbs here for food. It's a nice walk along a wooded trail--about a mile each way. The website warns of poison oak in places. We can meet at Gateway Transit Center to carpool. There is a parking fee of $3 per car.

We'll do the auto tour first, it's short and you can see wildlife that you don't see on the trail, because many animals don't run from cars as they do from people!

    Linda Marie,

Still haven't figured out how to send an email to someone without sending to the entire group.....sorry guys. I wanted to send you this link regarding Cape Disappointment that we discussed for your trip to Long Beach next week. It is definitely worth a stop.

So much to like about today.. A couple of you were questioning whether there was an annual type pass for Ridgefield, and I noticed on the receipt it said next time to put $15 in the envelope with a note of name & address and an annual pass would be sent to you..

Hey Su - can you txt me your phone #? 503.860.1001. My car is full - four of us coming from SW Pdx... Me, Linda Marie, Linda and Sarah. I'm picking up Linda M first then we'll pick up Linda and Sarah at 10th and Everett by 9:30. Just confirming. I wish there was a way to have side conversations without involving the whole group. Anybody know a way to do that? See ya all tomorrow!

Repost from earlier comment: Let's plan on starting the auto tour at 10:15. Then we'll drive over to the refuge headquarters to start the hiking portion at 11:00. Since everyone is arriving by carpooling, just go ahead and start the auto tour yourselves, then we'll all meet in the refuge headquarters parking lot at 11:00. Call or text me at[masked] if needed to coordinate on the day of the hike.

Does anyone want to carpool from Vancouver? I can pick up to 3 people at the Vancouver library downtown at 9:30. The only catch is I want to be back at the library by noon. Please send me email directly to [masked] so we don't confuse the group. Thanks Su for the idea.

    May 30, 2013

It's very unlikely you could make it back by noon unless you skip the hike and only do the auto tour

Hi. This is my first outing with this group. Looking forward to it. I live in the Southeast Hawthorne area. I would like to ride with someone either from inner Southeast or from the Gateway Transit center. Is that still a possibility?

Also, I recommend bringing binoculars,if you have them, for the auto part. Most of the wildlife you see there are waterfowl and other birds. They're gorgeous and fascinating with binoculars, but usually just little brown specs when viewed with the naked eye.

    1 · May 29, 2013

Can take two riders from Gateway, given directions or a reliable GPS.

Something has come up and i can't make it.

    May 29, 2013

I'm getting confused w/so many pick-ups in so many different places.
Hope there will still be some folks still going to GATEWAY. I live close by (well, sort of, I live in Vancouver near 205). I have room in my care for 2 riders. So I could either drive or be a passenger. See you Sat. I'm really looking forward to this trip.

I plan to drive and could pick up others on the West Side at the Sunset Transit Center (nr Hw 26 & Hwy 217) - or could ride with others. It is a good place to leave a car or come by public transportation.

    May 29, 2013

  • Barbara

I'll be coming down I-205 from West Linn so happy to take a ride or give one if need be (from Gateway)

    May 29, 2013

  • pete z.

I'm going to drive and take riders again this hike (from Gateway).

    May 29, 2013

I know the way and wonder if people on the westside would like to meet up for carpool? Driving to Gateway and back again isn't practical for those of us who live on this side of the river. Let me know if interested and we'll arrange to meet. Otherwise - I'll see you all up there.

I live west of Portland near NW 185th & Hwy 26. I'd rather get directly on I5 in Portland - coming out to 205 is quite out of the way for me. I'm happy to drive or hitch a ride if anyone else is out this way.
