Fall Colors Hike & Bring Your Dog

  • This location is shown only to members

KENOSHA PASS and the Colorado Trail: This is one of the most popular fall color hikes within an hour of Denver. It's so popular, that on weekends one may encounter as many as 100+ cars parked at, around the down the highway of the trailhead! Let's avoid this Disneyland of hiking and go on a Friday afternoon when it may be less crowded.

This trail is located off Hwy. 285, about 45 minutes west of Littleton. But we will be meeting at Wendy's in Aspen Park for detailed directions and carpooling.

The hike is easy to moderate, and starts out immersed in aspens. Gradually, the valley of South Park opens up to the west, and views of aspen-covered hills amazes you in both directions.

This will be an out-and-back, about 3 hours roundtrip, or about 4-5 miles. We'll stop mid-way for 15 minutes of silent contemplation of the view, colors, sounds of autumn.

THIS HIKE ONLY! BRING YOUR DOG if you'd like. I'm going to bring mine :-)  Dogs are allowed on leash, I think, on this trail.

WHERE TO MEET: Wendy's, off of Hwy. 285, in Aspen Park (25607 Conifer Road, google it). This will be on the right side of the highway, above you. If you end up in Conifer, you've gone too far. You'll see me in the parking lot because I'll be wearing an orange backpack. We can carpool from there. Let's meet at 1:30 pm at Wendy's and then drive west to Kenosha Pass. I'll wait at least 10 minutes for latecomers. Expect the hike to begin around 2:15 pm.

DONATION: Please consider a $1 donation to offset my MeetUp organizer fees and gas.

NOTE: In case of cancellation, please check this website for last-minute messages from me on the morning of the hike. If you don't see this hike listed, that means it's been canceled. This hike is generally weather-permitting, meaning that if it's snowing, raining, icy or howling like a banshee windy, I will cancel the hike.

A good group with many new faces. The colors were spectacular already, and the light of this season is magical.

Would anyone like to carpool from the Conoco at C-470 and Morrison Road? I can drive.

I am in the same boat as Julie. I am in Boulder, and I would love to join, but I cannot drive. Is anyone looking to carpool from Boulder? Happy to contribute gas money, and meet where you need me to. Thanks!

Is anyone coming from boulder area? I would love to come but need to carpool. I could meet someone somewhere if needed, but can't drive my car clear out there. Have not met with this group before, but have wanted to for a long time. Julie

IF anyone prefers to meet at the trailhead, or is running late, be advised that we will be hiking on the south side of the pass (left side of Hwy. 285), and will arrive at the trailhead no earlier than 2:15 pm. Look for a dark blue VW Golf - that's the car I'm bringing. Directions to trail: take Hwy 285 west, past Conifer, past Bailey, and at the top of Kenosha Pass you'll see pullouts and trail signs. Park on the left (south). If you're descending into South Park, you've gone too far.

Just an FYI, I'm hearing that because of the warm weather the leaves are still green this week. The peak will probably be pushed back for another week or two.

I'm at c470 & Kipling. Anyone coming my way on the way to Wendy's, I can share my car or ride in yours. Keep in mind there are dogs coming to this event ...and I'll have my new one with me.

If anyone wants to carpool from anywhere else other than the Wendy's, I recommend you message each other. I'm coming from Westminster but with my dog and hubby so my car is "full". Also, I'll still be curious to see how many people actually show up, despite the almost 20 people saying "yes."

I so wish I could do this. I'm usually off work on Fridays but this 9/23 I am scheduled to work. If you do another one, I'll so try to come.

Debbie, I am coming from Parker Rd and 225 so would love to meet you somewhere on 470 - maybe Broadway and car pool with you to the next meet up place. Anyone else?

Be green and let us carpool? Recommendations on meeting around C470 & 285 (I'm heading in from Highlands Ranch)? Will definitely chip in for gas $$ ;o) BTW Margaret, great idea on opening up rsvp AND going on a weekday!

I haven't limited the number of "yes" RSVPs for this MeetUp because typically, even when there's a MeetUp with a large number of folks saying yes, in the end it ends up that only a handful show up. I'm experimenting to see if opening up the hike to an unlimited number of people will encourage more people to show up. I'd love to see a group of at least a dozen :-)
