The Nuances of the Season Contemplative Hike

  • Dec 16, 2012 · 9:00 AM

ROUTE: NCAR to Chautauqua and back, Boulder.

With the climate changing, it's valuable to take the time to notice what we notice about each season and nature, and how that changes from year to year. Check out my article about "Climate Change and Hiking in Colorado".

For this, hike, we'll do an out-and-back on the South Mesa Trail starting from NCAR and go all the way to the Ranger Station at Chautauqua and then return back the same way. Roundtrip distance will be about 5 miles and it may take us about 3 to 3-1/2 hours to complete. We'll hike in and out of the woods and see great views of the Flatirons and Boulder. We can have a break and snack at the Ranger Station area before heading back, and we'll discuss what we've been observing about the ecology of the trail.

WHERE TO MEET: Parking lot of NCAR (the building atop the hill; the National Center for Atmospheric Research), at the western end of Table Mesa Dr in south Boulder. I'll be driving a dark blue VW. Take the Boulder Turnpike and exit Table Mesa Dr. Go west, follow all the up the hill where it winds around and ends by NCAR.

WHAT TO BRING: You may wish to bring a camera and/or journal to record what you're seeing. Bring poles or ice/snow traction devices (YakTrax or Microspikes) in case of icy spots - otherwise, you may be slipping and sliding.

DONATION: $2 to cover MeetUp monthly dues.

CANCELLATION: Check this website the morning of the hike. If it's no longer listed, it means it's been canceled. Can text messages to[masked] as well.

DOGS are allowed on leash, please.

I would love to go, and I may have my 7 year old son with me that morning. Would he be welcomed, or are your hikes geared for adults only?

Hi Linda, I have nothing against people bringing their children. We will be hiking at a 2 mph pace, so if you're comfortable with that, and your son is too, then it's up to you if you'd like to bring him. That's a pace that's neither really slow nor really fast, just moderate.
