Many times a modern men’s tuxedo can be purchased from EBay for astonishing prices. Search for: "men’s tailcoat"
There are many ways to concoct an outfit that gives an impression of Regency style.
For a waistcoat/vest, buy one at a thrift store (look in both the men’s and ladies’ departments).
Make tan knickers by cutting off thrift store khaki pants below the knee (or just wear long khaki pants).
Wear a regular suit jacket and white shirt--but with the collar turned up on the shirt, adding an elaborate "period" necktie.
Of course, remember that a lot of the gentlemen will just wear modern suits and that's fine too.
An existing floor-length or tea-length dress with a high waistline and sleeves will serve. It could be decorated with ribbons, bows, silk flowers, sashes, lace, etc. around the sleeves, neckline, and/or hem. Don’t forget to check the thrift stores!
