Do you want to have fun dancing socially with a group of friendly people? This group is to raise awareness and invite folks to join Birmingham's local contra dancing group. Contra dancing has similar moves to square dancing and it is social dancing with a partner. It is really fun and great exercise.
Our group, Birmingham FOOTMAD (Friends Of Old Time Music And Dance), dances twice a month with a beginner lesson before each dance. You can check out http://www.footmadbirmingham.org/ for pictures and videos of contra dancing. No partner needed!
• What we'll do
Join us for a fun contra dance. A beginner lesson starts at 7pm with the dance actually starting at 7:30. No partner needed! Spread the word and bring a friend or two.
COST (at the door): $10 for adults, $8 for college students, $4 for those 13-18, and free for those 12 and under.
PARKING: A lighted parking lot with security cameras is beside the YWCA on 3rd Ave. N. There is also street parking.
Whistlin’ Rufus is comprised of Ann Whitley on fiddle, Doug Olsen on mandolin, Peter Jenkins on guitar, and Cindy Olsen on bass. These folks have all been playing for contra dances for a long, long time, in various configurations, and Doug, Cindy and Ann have been playing together since 1991. They hail from the Atlanta area, and travel all over the southeast together. Primarily old-time, they throw in New England tunes for variety.
Doug Singleton has been calling around the Southeast and Midwest USA now for 20 years calling contras, squares, unusual figures and mixers. His calling includes high energy dances with lots of interesting patter and a clear and concise teaching style.
• What to bring
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Bring a water bottle if you have one to stay hydrated (contra dancing is good exercise!)
• Important to know
Contra dancing is social dancing, but everyone dances with everyone. No partner needed as there will be plenty of folks at the dance. :-)
