Arkansas Spring Break Ride

Please note New Date!!!

This is an opportunity to make a three-day ride to Arkansas with your only expenses being food and fuel.
Because of my schedule and the weather forecast this ride will have to be

Saturday, Sunday, and Monday April 13th, 14th, and 15th.

. I do realize that few, if any, can make arrangements for such a ride but I’m going to go ahead and schedule just in case there is someone who can. I’ve made this ride alone a few times and it’s a great ride. The route twists and turns on some of the best motorcycle roads in the nation.
I can’t say that the weather will be perfect because right now it looks like it will be a little on the cool side, especially for the Arkansas portion. I can, however, say that it will be dry because I won’t do this in the rain. 40 degrees is my lower limit for riding. If it’s 40 or above I can dress for it and still enjoy the ride so long as I can stay dry. Better that than three days of oppressive heat.
The ride will start in Arlington at the QT located at Collins and I-20. Meet-up time is 7:30am and KSU is 8:00.
Day one will be the ride up to Flippin, Arkansas. 465 miles starting in the Metroplex and ending in the heart of the Ozarks. Quite the contrast and includes SR-123, AKA the Arkansas Dragon.
Day two will be a little more laid back, as far as mileage goes, but will cover some of the most spectacular roads imaginable.
Day three will be the return. A lot like day one but different roads in the Arkansas portion.
Accommodations: 2,300 sq ft 3 bedroom 2 bath with no furniture other that a couple of folding chairs and a couple of bar stools. It does have running water and electricity. There is also plenty of firewood. You would need to bring your own sleeping bag. Treat it as if you are going camping without the need to bring a tent.

I should mention that I have a gravel driveway. It’s not loose but it is kind of steep. I’ve never had a problem and the previous owner also rode motorcycles (Honda Valkyrie) but I thought it only fair to mention it.

The time has finally come. I have been trying to do a motorcycle ride to Arkansas for months now but every time I made plans something came up. Usually it was the weather. It would be nice all week only to turn nasty for the weekend. One weekend that I didn’t plan to go it got up to 90 and then the next weekend when I did plan to go it was in the 40s here and in the 30s up there. That was then, this is now. 50 in the morning and 75 in the afternoon is just about perfect. Leather weather! 1,400 miles starting Saturday at sunrise…GIDDYUP!

Randy I postponed my trip and I am leaving Friday morning. Will be in heading north on from Azle to Oklahoma visiting Davis and Sulphur OK waterfalls spending the night in McAlester OK Friday night. Then heading east to the famous Talimena Trail and the SW Ozark Mountains drive into Mena AR then up towards Ozark AR on Saturday. From Ozark there is a great ride thru the Ozark mountains towards Flippin. Where can I meet you and the group in AR? would like to ride with the group to your house. Will meet-up when you are in the area. I will call you Thursday night to set plans. I will be returning Monday or Tuesday to DFW.

My primary need in Clarksville is going to be gas but it never hurts to have food options as well. The South Park Restaurant sounds great but if I have time to eat it’s gonna have to be fast food. So the Shell Station on AR 103 on the north side of I-40 will work fine for me. It’s between a McDonalds and a KFC. I don’t know exactly what time I’ll arrive in Clarksville but I hope to leave there no later than 5:00 to get to Flippin before dark. The earlier the better. It’s going to be a long day, 470 miles with about 11 hours of daylight after the 8:00am KSU in Arlington.

This is the schedule: KSU at 8:00, Caddo, Oklahoma 10:00, Talihina, Oklahoma 12:20, Clarcksville, Arkansas 3:00, Western Grove, Arkansas 5:30, Flippin, Arkansas 7:00. There won’t be much daylight left when we get to Flippin so we will try not to fall behind schedule. If we can make good time and get ahead of schedule that would be great! We will go straight to the house and turn on the lights and make sure that everything is ok then we can go back into town and get something to eat. Or if we are early enough we can stop at a good BBQ joint that I know of in Yellville on our way and get some ribs to take to the house and eat there.

I have to change the date one-last-time!!! I’m changing the dates from Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The new dates are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I’ve already talked with Doug and he’s ok with that. I called Merle and he’s ok with it too but his bike is acting up so he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to make it anyway. The problem continues to be the morning temperatures in Flippin on day two and day three of the ride. When we leave Arlington on Friday the temperature will be in the upper 40’s. This is cold but still doable, it will warm to near 60 by the time we reach Flippin. It will be sunny and that always helps. On Saturday it will start out in the lower 40’s and warn up into the mid 60’s. Then on Sunday, more sunshine and temperatures in the lower 50’s warming into the mid-to-upper 70’s. It’s very frustrating to see warm temperatures up there only to have it turn cold again when it’s time to go. For the past week it’s actually been warmer up there than it’s been down here!

Depending on the weather and how everybody feels about it there is the option of spending another day in Arkansas and coming back on Sunday instead of Saturday. A ride over to Mammoth Springs or Eureka Springs would be nice.

The new dates are April 11, 12, and 13. Hopefully it won’t be too cold by then and maybe we can hook up with the Extended Ride, April 06-14 FW to Central Oklahoma then NorthWest Arkansas that Terry Michael has going on.

Check out the temp for the 24-25, looks cool high 50 and low 27. Is the ride still going? I'm off and would like to go but think that is a little to cold for me.

So far the weather is not looking good on the Arkansas end. I could end up pushing the date into Easter weekend if necessary. I hate to have to do that because I planed to ride with some old buddies to the Hill Country then. But I really do need to make the trip to Arkansas. I haven’t been up there since Thanksgiving and even though the neighbor has my number and is supposed to call if he sees a problem we still worry if everything is ok. One thing is certain, sometime between 3/24/13 and 3/31/13 I WILL ride to Arkansas.

I may have to change the dates because of the weather. I’ve been in touch with Merle and he’s ok with that. It will either be Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Or even later. Cold is ok (within reason) but wet is not.
