Let’s go east for lunch in the Piney Woods

  • Apr 7, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • QT

We have been south recently to the Loco Coyote and the Horny Toad and we have been west to the Ice House in Albany but it’s been a while since we’ve been east. I think it’s about time for us to ride through some pine trees again.
It’s not easy for us to ride east because it means having to traverse Dallas to get there. Sorry, but it’s a necessary evil.
But the payoff is worth it. Every time we do this ride all that make it have a good time. The Shed is a good place to eat (although one time the service was slow) and the route is great.
We will go due east on what is essentially an old Stage Coach Route to Edom, Texas then we will head south on some roads that will give you a taste of what it’s like to ride through the piney woods of east Texas.
We should also be able to see some early Bluebonnets and other wildflowers.
It is a longish ride at about 280 miles. The main reason we don’t ride to east Texas is because you really don’t get into the pine trees until you get east of Athens. A really great east Texas ride would be a two or three-day deal but I can show you what you are missing in about 8 hours.

We will meet up at the QT 4201 S Collins Street, Arlington (Collins and I-20) at 9:30 and KSU at 10:00.

One thing’s for sure, I need to work on my so-called “short cuts” because I missed the turn in Corsicana. As it turned out it wasn’t too bad. I hate US 287 anyway and FM 55 is a nice road.

As always, I urge everyone to be on time. I have set the start time late so that nobody should have to struggle too much getting up early and also to give those coming from the far north and west a shot at making this ride to the east.
If everyone will be all gassed up and ready to ride at 9:30 we can have our pre-ride briefing out of the way and everybody on their bike with the motor running at 10:00 so we can put the kickstands up (KSU) on time.
It’s a two-hour ride to The Shed Café in Edom. We will make a potty-stop in Kemp and we’ll need to keep this as brief as possible. As it is we will get to The Shed at about the same time as the “Church Crowd.” This plus the fact that the nice weather is going to fill the parking lot with bikes means that our stop in Edom will likely be a long one. They DON’T take reservations.
The actual ride will not be hectic or rushed in any way. We just don’t have a lot of time to be standing around until after we get to Edom.

I will take a look at where we are timewise after we eat and I’ll shorten the return route if necessary. I do believe that we will have time to ride the route that I have planed but in any case it is my intention that everybody gets home before dark

Tyler-Porter's Bluff Road - First mapped in 1846 and 1849 by state surveyors John Lawler and Samuel Huffer, this trail may pre-date Mexican rule. Used as a military road and a cattle trail, it extended from Tyler in Smith County to Porter's Bluff in northwestern Navarro County. By 1870, the Memphis and El Paso Stage Line made twelve mail stops along that route, nine of them in Van Zandt County. Much of the old trail near Edom was included when State Highways 64 and 279, as well as local farm roads, were created. In 1997, vestiges of the Tyler-Porter's Bluff Road were still visible in some locations.

WEll it is too windy to fly but not too windy to ride. I need some road time to get ready for my Colorado trip with Tim Hulse so I am going to ride this ride. Looking forward to it.

Gary and I talked the other day. We thought about avoiding the construction and leaving around 8:50 to take the scenic route of Hwy 10 to 157/Collins.
We'll be there at 8:45 and take a vote when all arrive :)

I'm near Rufe Snow & North Tarrant.
I'll attempt to email you my phone number so we can talk/text about a place convenient for all of us.
Off the top of my head, I'm thinking maybe QT on Precinct Line at 183 - leaving there around 9:10-9:15.

I do hear the concerns of those who can’t make a long ride. I will have a couple of easy to follow “shortcuts” for the return portion of the ride in case anyone needs them. You could be back to the starting point as early as 3pm after traveling a distance of 200 miles.

When I say that this is a longish ride I mean it. I live near the meet up point and it will be a little less than 270 miles foe me. But say you are coming from Lake Worth, it would be 300 miles total. This is the reason we don’t do many rides to the east. You have to ride 100 miles just to get into an area that has the “east Texas feel” to it. I’m talking sweeping curves with big pine trees lining both sides of the road. You just don’t see much of that to the north, west, or south of the metroplex. About half of this ride is just getting there and back. The other half is the fun part. Is it worth it? For me it is. I guess that’s why I keep going back.
