Monongahela National Forest - Seneca Creek - July 5-7

  • Jul 5, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We will be doing the Allegheny Trail/Seneca Creek/High Meadows loop.  This will attempt to be a 24 mile 3-day backpacking trip, http://www.midatlantichikes.com/sc-09.htm.

Trail Head Parking:[masked],[masked]

Day 1-10 miles

Day 2-~8 miles

Day 3-7 miles

Ed, Ray and Laura are heading down Thursday to hike in Dolly Sods Wilderness and will either camp there or somewhere near the trail head for Seneca Rocks. We will be planning to start the hike Friday (5th) at 10 AM and do the route as written up in the trail guide Salve posted - so about 10 miles day one and about 7 on day 3. Will still do day 2 as a day hike and stay at day one camp 2nd night. Please post by Wednesday at 5 pm and let us know if you are joining us to hike at Dolly Sods Thursday, at the trail-head at Seneca rocks at 10 AM Friday, or at camp if you can't come until later Friday. If you wish to join us Thursday we could all ride together - we are leaving from Newark DE at 7 AM. Will send address for those doing that option. Looking forward to a fun weekend!

Do I need to bring my tent or can I share it with any of you? Mine is a 4 person tent.

It looks like I may not be able to go this weekend. I can drop off the tent and map on wed evening or thursday morning. Laura will be coordinating the trip so please keep posted!

Prasanna, I haven't heard from you about that tent so I'm presuming you are using your four man tent. Have fun.

Great Prasanna. Looking forward to hiking with you. We hope you can meet us Thursday. It will save you the drive by yourself and then gets you the added bonus of the dolly sods hiking too. It's a beautiful area!

I am fine with backpacking. Yes I do have a car and we can carpool. I was thinking of starting early morning on friday (July 5) to get there at the trail head for lunch. Will that work for you?

      June 25, 2013

    • Salve

      That works.

I am a good hiker, but not so great at swimming, hope that is not a problem.

      Swimming/wading is optional.

Since we are now doing this Friday - Sunday (5th - 7th), we will probably head down the morning of the 4th and do something in Dolly sods for that day thru morning of the 5th until the 3 day backpack starts. Anyone is welcome to join us for that.

    June 19, 2013

  • Salve

@all, I will try to post all of the trail info soon. However, I need to find someone to carpool with, so once I re-post the event hopefully more people will sign up. I can forward maps in the event that I can't go.

@Phil, Laura and Ray look like they will be going down July 3rd-July 7, I will not be able to go down until July 5th-6th, for the 3day backpacking portion.

Ray and I have been looking forward to getting back to this area to backpack. We will probably arrive late Wednesday evening (3rd) and get a hotel near the discovery center. We may also stay another night Saturday after the hike rather than driving back late.

    June 5, 2013

    • Salve

I'm thinking of arriving after lunch. The first portion of the hike above is not that long. I'm thinking of just doing the trip above and adding some miles in to reach the high point. Also we may try to just do this as a base camp type trip.
