National Mall Photo Walk

Let's take a photo walk on the National Mall. We will start and end at the Smithsonian Metro Station. The group can decide which direction we go from the meeting point.

The sun will set at 5:21pm so bring a tripod is you have one for some low light photos when the sun is setting!

This will be the first Meetup with the new name so come out and let the organizers know what sorts of Meetups you would be interested in attending! We will be doing things a little differently than we have in the past so we will be talking about that at this Meetup.

I enjoyed this Meetup! I have never seen the Capitol Reflecting Pool frozen over with people walking on the ice. It was nice talking with everyone and sharing photography tips. It was cold but I was ready for it and stayed warm and cozy.

Had a great time! I took a few photos from the frozen capital reflecting pound. It was great meeting all those who braved the weather to attend. I can't wait to see the photos.

A couple of tips for today's Meetup:
    1) Be sure your batteries are fully charged.
    2) Dress for the weather, 33º and possible snow.

I'll have more winter weather tips for those that attend. I'll be heading up to DC at about 1pm from Stafford and taking the Metro from Springfield. Anyone that would like a ride please let me know. We can meet at a commuter lot on Rt. 610.

I'm waiving off too it’s just too cold. IMHO I'm not all that impressed by the amount of peer pressure to attend this event. Its cold respect that people don't want to be out in the cold walking around and stop arguing about whether it's going to be 9F or 33F, cold is cold.

The weather will be extremely cold less than 9 degrees. I checked the temperature environment for my camera in the manual. I think it will be best for me to wait until the weather is warmer. The weatherman predicted more snow tomorrow in the afternoon. I will not be attending. Don't want to mess up the camera in extreme cold weather conditions.

Hi Delma, I'm wondering where you see a forecast of less than 9º. The forecast temperature for 3pm in Washington DC is 33º and TWC shows a current temperature 24º at 7:15am. Snow showers are in the forecast but only a 30% chance. I am actually hoping for light snow flurries. Images of light snow falling would be very cool!

Its going to be my first ever meeting like this and am so happy. What are the key things to hold along as a photographer?.

    January 20, 2014

    • Tanya

Comfortable walking shies and dress in layers ;-) It's important to bring charged batteries and bring your tripod. If you don't know your camera like the back of your hand, bring your camera Manuel so you can change your settings, white balance, etc. going until 6pm will give you awesome sunset and dusk pictures. You may want to play and change tryout settings to see the cool images you can create.

Tripods cannot be used inside Lincoln, Jefferson, inside the ring of flags at Washington, nor at Vietnam & Korea. (See permits section on nps.gov site for the Mall). Plenty of places we can use tripods though!

    January 18, 2014

    • Karen B.

Here is the link to the Park Service's policy on permitted (commercial) and non-permitted (amateur) photography. There are plenty of places tripods are allowed. A friend was ticketed 2 years ago using a tripod where he shouldn't have been, so they do enforce this at times. http://www.nps.gov/na...

      January 18, 2014

    • Tanya

Karen is correct to those locations. Also in the past I've been stopped from having my tripod on the top steps at the Lincoln - some days I've been lucky and haven't been stopped so just keep in mind what NPS says and as a group don't break the rules because that could mess it up for photogs as a whole.

This would be a great opportunity to take pictures on the National Mall with my NIkon D5200. I have used the Nikon Coolpix to take photos on the National Mall and was surprised how nice the mages of the historical buildings appear in a camera such as the smaller camera. I will not use my tripod (don't have a license to shoot in public) but look forward to attending this event. Hopefully nothing will happen to prevent me from participating in this Photo Walk.

Delma, When you say "I will not use my tripod (don't have a license to shoot in public)" what sort of license are you talking about? As far as I know you need a license of any kind to use a tripod.

      January 3, 2014

    • Amartya

Yes, I too would like to get clarification on this license for tripod use statement! Thanks.
