At St Jude's church in Carlton (235 Palmerston Street), we hold free English classes every Thursday 4:30–6 pm, every week of the year.
Note: for other free English classes see: http://www.yourenglishcorner.net/melbourne.html (for the whole of Australia and other countries start here: http://www.yourenglishcorner.net/).
The teacher has a CELTA in English teaching and a syllabus focusing on practical English skills for international students, such as IELTS speaking practice, colloquial expressions and slang, Australian culture, and IELTS writing. Our main focus is on practicing conversation, speaking and listening, usually through ESL games (e.g. Taboo, Pictionary, etc).
The class has a casual environment where you can come as you please, for example, after class.
The English Class is a part of Cross Cultures, so you have the opportunity to stay afterwards for a $4 dinner! About 50–70 people eat there each week, mainly international students. After dinner you're welcome to stay and study the Bible with us. At 9pm we have dessert!
The classes are located at St Jude's church, 235 Palmerston Street, on the corner of Elgin and Lygon streets, 5 minutes walk from Melbourne Uni—map at http://goo.gl/maps/QEquK. To get there you could follow the 1 or 8 tram line as the 1 or 8 tram leaves the Melbourne Uni platform and goes towards Brunswick or East Coburg, you will find it two tram stops after Melbourne Uni at stop 112. Bus routes that go very near the church include 200, 201, 203, and 207. Go into the entrance on Keppel Street. The church's website is http://www.stjudes.org.au. We are NOT the church next to Melbourne Central (which is Cross Culture church).

The Facebook page has information about every class, downloadable English materials, including all of our ESL games, materials related Australian culture, and other useful links.
We have also released several apps for the iPhone and Android that use material from the popular 'slang' part of the class to teach people spoken-style English using real-life situations in a 'quiz' format. They are all free to download and available from:
