Oct 12-13 -camp, hike, find crystals! Copper-Breaks State Park, near Quanah TX

Confirming Copper-Breaks State Park for the weekend trip to camp, hike and look for crystals... near Quanah Texas, about 3 hour drive from Dallas.  Try to arrive about noon Saturday.  There two main ways to get there.  Drive west on SH-114 and north when you reach Hwy 6, OR go northwest on SH-287 to Quanah and then south on Hwy 6.  We will be at the KIOWA Campground but you can use the main one if you need electricity.  There are showers, toilets and water at all the campgrounds.  [masked] Maps:  http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/copper-breaks/map

We have a geologist coming too (Doug Schwartzenberger) that can aide us in our search and identification.  It will be cool enough at night to enjoy a campfire.  Like the Wichita Mtns, we will primarily be hiking and spotting various crystals on the ground or in certain types of geological formations.  In a group, the entrance fee is $1 each and camping fees are for up to 8 per campsite: $20.00 Electric Site; $10.00 Non-electric; $8.00 for walk-in sites.  Or, you can get a motel room or cottage/cabin in nearby Quanah or Vernon TX.

-Just in case it re-open by Friday Oct. 11th, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and Nature Preserve is located 25 miles northwest of Lawton, Oklahoma.  If so, we will be at Doris Campground with clean water, showers and toilets.  It does require a fee and permit (section B): $20.00 Electric Site; $10.00 Non-electric; $8.00 for walk-in sites.  For reservations email me or call the Wichita Nature Preserve office and ask for Quinton Smith at[masked]-2110.  Or email him: [masked]   As we get closer to the weekend of the trip, Oct. 12-13, we will finalize the plans and make sure everyone knows what they are.  I may go up the afternoon of the 11th just to be sure our campsite is as good as we can find and there are no surprises.  The Wichita Preserve website with maps is: http://www.fws.gov/refuge/wichita_mountains/  The map of the Doris campground on Quanah Parker Lake is at: http://www.fws.gov/uploadedFiles/map-camp-doris.pdf  The map showing the lake is: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=map+lake+quanah+parker+ok&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x87ace538a9a7d7bd:0x2bdebcac515d7312,Quanah+Parker+Lake&gl=us&ei=AWQ3UpPAJuqe2QXv0oHICA&ved=0CDkQ8gEwAA   There are motels, cabins, cottages  nearby in towns of Cache, Lawton and Medicine Park but you will need to make your own selection and reservations.  If you want to share a room or cabin/cottage then please post a message on this Meetup page, and how to contact you.  If you want to get a ride or can give a ride, then post that information and what part of the metroplex you live in.)

Call or email me if there are questions.  [masked]  Dale

Thanks Dale for organizing this trip. The people who didn't go, you sure did miss a lot of treasures.

There were a LOT of crystals on the slopes of the ravines and washes but not like "points" found in Hot Springs AR. Most appear to be Calcium Carbonate and Selenite based, and a lot have Copper in them or adhered to them. (4 out of 5 stars)

Well, it looks like I won't be able to join this weekend. My girls are interested in going... does anyone else have elementary aged kids that would be interested in going also???

OK, I am looking at another site in OK for a trip in early Nov. called Quartz Mtn. State Park and it is open.

I spoke with the Copper-Breaks ranger today 10-7 and we will have the whole park to ourselves. There are 3 campgrounds but only the main one has electricity. The KIOWA campground is a little more secluded and I will camp there starting Friday night unless it storms. They are close by each other and this is not a huge area. Groups pay $1/day entry per person and 8 people are allowed per camp site, at $10/site at Kiowa and $20 at main w/electricity. All sites can use showers, toilets and water. Bring a little firewood if you can. See map: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/copper-breaks/map Dale[masked]

Being on furlough, i'd best stay home till the paychecks resume. That was so cool the way you came up with another site so quickly. Sorry to bail on you.

    October 4, 2013

  • Dale M.

I was told that each campsite is $20 w/electricity and each can have 8 people but they can make exceptions. 2-3 campsites is only $40-60 total, so we can split that per head for $3 a night or so. There is also a $2 entry fee so $5/night each.

Is Copper Breaks Group camping area available? It can hold up to 40 people at 5 campsites for $35/night.

I was hoping to take some specimens home:/ the 'unofficially' also means it's technically a Class C misdeamnor...worst case is $500 fine plus the record if a violation is ticketed and charged. The other park may have similar regulations, it didn't occur to me to look into it...but the rock collecting was the main attraction in addition to hanging out with some really cool people!!

Of course the government would shutdown and interrupt our plans for a date when I might actually be available and want to go. Grr. Argh. Hopefully they'll open soon and we can reschedule if need be. I want to go camping! And digging for crystals!

    October 2, 2013

    • Dale M.

Of course! I will keep you all posted on any changes.

    October 1, 2013

    • Dale M.

I am sure the Doris Campground also has RV parking but you will want to be sure to reserve a space yourself. Again, the park may not be open Oct 12-13 so stand by. The contact info is in the Meetup announcement.

I'm confused, are you still wanting to know if we want to go on those dates? If opening that weekend then my answer is still yes.thx

    October 1, 2013

    • Dale M.

I cannot say if the park will be open Oct 12-13 yet, due to the "shutdown". I will TRY to keep this date for the trip. I will send notices once I know more.

    Dale,
I'm going to drive up and camp in my little SUV. The road looks pretty nice on satellite maps. Do you know how steep the incline is? I won't need a campsite with electricity, but would like to be near the group, if possible..
Kamilah, thanks for the ride offer. Once I decided to camp, i knew all my junk would be an overload. Look forward to seeing you up there.

For now, I just want to know HOW MANY WOULD LIKE TO GO, so I can plan for the size of the group. You can camp with us or get a motel for the night. -Please RSVP with a note, and I will finalize plans soon. Thanks!

Count me in with the campers please. Although, like one of the other ladies I am going to be using my car for my tent because that's just going to work well for me. I am assuming that normally we would be parking in our car by tent pads; please let me know if the camping area is a primitive area where we're parking in a parking lot in the house campers are hiking into the camping area. Thanks!

My husband Ron And we are begining walkers not hikers is this a problem

Do we need to bring our own tools for digging ? Or will y'all provide them for us , if not what kind of tools should we bring with us ?

    September 20, 2013

    • Dale M.

Mary, I am told by Doug (the geologist) that this will not be about "digging" as much as "hiking" over large areas where they can be found on the surface. Takes a sharp eye but he says they are there. I realize this poses a problem but we will camp together and/or be able to get motel rooms together near each other. How can I help?

      September 20, 2013

      Hiking??? Lolol. Bummer
      I don't hike

      September 20, 2013

I live right here in Medicine Park I can help out in any way if you need anything. There is a hotel in Medicine Park as well which is very close to the refuge, it's fairly new so may not be on a map yet.

Excellent. I think there are cottages and suites too. I will get back to you prior to the trip weekend.

Thomas and I would love to join you. We can do any type of camping - car, walk-in, primitive. We were planning on camping that weekend but hadn't decided where yet. This sounds perfect!

Finding a ride determines if I can come. I would get a single room or camp out. If anyone is taking riders, let me know. I'd chip in for gas.
