Welcome to Chicago Crystal a group of people in Chicago that enjoy the Crystal Programming Language. Agenda: 6:00 to 6:15 - Food & Mingling 6:15 to 7:45 - Presentation after - Post meetup mingling @ Monk's Pub Speaker: Art Linkov I am the Chief Scientist at NeuraLegion, responsible for the company’s research and driving its AI and ML development. Before NeuraLegion, I was a PhD student focusing on Stem Cells & Regeneration in The Technion, Israel’s equivalent of MIT. During my PhD, I dealt a lot with data analysis, biological algorithms and experimental methodologies, which naturally led me to ML & AI. In 2017 I decided to join my good friend Bar Hofesh to build the world's first AI-based “hacker that will enslave the world”, in pure Crystal. Together we embarked on the journey and founded NeuraLegion, an AI-powered Application Security Testing solution. Writing code was always a passion of mine, so I put my scientist training to use by introducing biologically inspired algorithms and knowledge of data science into our technology. Although we are not that close to world domination by TCP/IP, we did learn quite a few things about AI in general and in Crystal specifically. Presentation: Nowadays Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are extremely popular, in many respects because there is an abundance of tools that can help any newbie create cool and useful projects, even without fully understanding all the mathematical shenanigans. We all love Crystal, that's why we're here. And it is great to see how far the community has progressed in the past year. However, Crystal still has a way to go to compete with more established languages for ML such as Python. In my talk I'm going to try to discuss where Crystal is at and how together as a community we can push it further to be on the map for ML enthusiasts everywhere! Food: Sponsored by 8thlight Remote: We are remote friendly as possible. Our Zoom session will start 30 min before the meetup starts and chat will be monitored for the speaker. Welcome to Chicago Crystal a group of people in Chicago that enjoy the Crystal Programming Language. Agenda: 6:00 to 6:15 - Food & Mingling 6:15 to 7:00 - Presentation after - Post meetup mingling @ Monk's Pub Speaker: Ary Borenszweig Hi, I'm Ary! I'm a long time programmer (20+ years) who eventually stumbled upon Ruby and fell in love with it. I always liked languages (even spoken ones!) and so one day I had this idea of Ruby but typed and compiled. The result, Crystal, is not exactly like Ruby, but I think it retains big part of its fun and productivity factors. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my wife and kid and also playing a lot of video games and playing a bit of piano and guitar. Presentation: So how does Crystal do its magic? What's the single most used thing in Ruby and Crystal? What makes Ruby and Crystal so powerful and fun to use? In this talk we'll explore this and how Crystal manages to compile your high-level description of your program into a ready-to-execute binary. RSVP REQUIRED: Please rsvp by 12pm (noon) the day of the event. Walk-ins will not be allowed. Food: We Thank Braintree for sponsoring the meetup and providing food. Remote: meet.google.com/rrd-vekw-ndd We are remote friendly as possible. Our Google Hangout will start 30 min before the meetup starts and chat will be monitored for the speaker.

Welcome to Chicago Crystal a group of people in Chicago that enjoy the Crystal Programming Language. Agenda: 6:00 to 6:15 - Food & Mingling 6:15 to 7:45 - Presentation after - Post meetup mingling @ Elephant & Castle Speaker: Brian J. Cardiff In the programming realm, I have a history in .Net, I fall for Ruby later and found a new home in Crystal. I like to use Haskell and Prolog as much as I can. My CS thesis was in formal methods fields. Besides enjoying the formal aspects of a solution I value visualizations, details, and experience as much. To stay out of the keyboard you can find me in social dance floors of Blues and Swing music. Presentation: Streams of information Let's review and compare a couple of scenarios where data flows in and out of the system and we would like to avoid investing too much resources. What have Crystal std-lib done up until know? What are the open questions for future work? I have some initial idea of the talk. Nothing further written yet. What do you think about the following RSVP REQUIRED: Please rsvp by 12pm (noon) the day of the event. Walk-ins will be allowed for this venue but we use the rsvp for food ordering. Agenda: 6:00 to 6:15 - Food & Mingling 6:15 to 7:45 - Presentation after - Post meetup mingling @ Monk's Pub Speaker: Chris Watson is a software and web developer with an immense passion for open source. He is married with 2 fur babies and is currently living in Utah. Presentation: NLP, or natural language processing, has its roots in the beginning of modern computing. In fact Alan Turing, who is widely considered to be the father of the computer, published his famed article "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" all the way back in 1950. To date the most advanced NLP capabilities have been available only to the Python community through libraries like Tensorflow and Spacy, but thanks to the powerful capabilities of Crystal it may soon be possible to perform the same operations in a language that's fast, beautiful, and safe. In this talk we'll be exploring some of the capabilities available to the Crystal community currently using Cadmium, a collection of shards focused on NLP and general machine learning. In specific we'll take a look at cadmium_lang, a language detection library with support for more than 110 languages. RSVP REQUIRED: Please rsvp by 12pm (noon) the day of the event. Walk-ins will not be allowed. Food: Thank you to Braintree our sponsor who will be providing food and drinks for the event. Remote: We are remote friendly as possible.
