London-Surrey 100

Exceptionally, this is not a route I have plotted myself. I will be following the London-Surrey 100 miles ride, aka London Prudential Ride. The crowds and the upbeat vibe will be missing but I thought it could be interesting to try this soon to become iconic route. This is supposed to be the cycling equivalent to the London Marathon. Let's go beat some records then :-)

Start: We meet 8:30am at London Bridge for a prompt departure at 8.45am. The original event started at the Stratford Olympic Park. Whilst that is a convenient start for me I believe it's out of the way for most of the group regulars. Therefore, I will start the ride from London Bridge.

Route: We will cycle 100 miles along rolling terrain however, a total 5000ish ft along that distance suggests an overall moderate elevation. I guess the challenge will be in the distance and the occasional steep climbs. Nothing that we can't tackle with sheer determination.

Please be mindful that we'll cycle our way out of London and this will be along rather busy roads, which may not be everyone's cup of tea.

PACE OF THE RIDE: Expect our usual 15mph average bar along the busy London roads. There should be a few railway stations en route in case you need to bail out. The group is above individuals so those who are not within the group's average pace will have to bail out. I tend to be the weakest link so if you fall behind me you will have to continue on your own. Conversely please note that this is a social event. This is not a race or a time trial. If you don't fancy riding in a group or waiting for someone that may be slightly slower or to have a chat whilst cycling or if you prefer riding solo and shooting off at your own pace please do not join us. We love cycling but we also enjoy the social aspect of it.

ATTENDANCE: Please only RSVP if your social/work calendar looks free for this Saturday.  We don't welcome last minute cancellations .

Stops: We don't really stop often. A toilet/mechanical stop when needed, and stops every 30 miles.

Lunch: This ride will be in "sportive mode" therefore, I don't expect to stop for lunch. However, we could go for celebratory drinks when we arrive back in London.

What to bring: Please buy snacks in advance and plenty of them. You'll also need water to refuel regularly. Weatherproof gear. Spare inner tube(s), pump, a mobile phone and some cash. A  Helmet is mandatory when you ride with us.

HEALTH & SAFETY: Cycling is fun and safe but no sporting activity is risk-free. To minimise such risk when you take part in our rides you will be expected to ride safely, wearing a helmet and abiding by the Highway code. No red light jumping, unexpected turns or dangerous overtaking will be accepted. If we feel you are putting other group members at risk you will be asked to bail out immediately. Please note that you join us at your own risk and that by joining us on this trip you understand, accept and agree to take all the risks inherent and expected from cycling on the roads exempting myself and your fellow riders for any accident/injury you may sustain. This should be read as a clause of exemption of liability for all purposes.

Weather : I will happily go ahead with forecast of drizzle and scattered showers. Anything less appealing like heavy rain and gust winds will result in cancellation of the event. Apologies in advance.

One of the aims of the Cycling group is to appreciate of our natural surroundings, local towns and villages. We hope to minimise our impact by making sure that we are responsible for our litter. Please dispose of all of your litter and snack wrappers carefully".

Loved the ride, although the roads were very busy at times and not in best condition. Looking forward to riding with you again :)

I'm giving this ride 4 stars because the roads it took us through in Surrey are in need of some serious resurfacing. That and the traffic in some stretches made me feel like I wanted to get home for the last 25 miles. On a good note, we did some serious climbing and personally I dismystified Box Hill. Now that I've climbed it I wonder what all the fuss is about. Smashing weather and a strong and supportive team. The ride though, won't feature on our calendar next year. Thanks everyone for coming. X

Hi guys, the GPX for this ride has been uploaded. I remapped it from Liverpool St but ignore that. We'll meet at London Bridge as it's more convenient for the majority. The ride finishes at Westminster at which point we can decide whether to haave celebratory drinks there or somewhere else.

Please change your attendance status NOW if you are no longer available for this ride.

Please note that this event is unsupported and at an intermediate pace. Make sure that you are at the right level or you will need to bail out thus preventing someone else to join us. Thanks :-)

    August 16, 2013

    • Bea

Hi Craig, I thought it wouldn't be safe to have more a larger group on the road cycling out of London.

  • Maggie

Looking forward to this one - haven't cycled with you for a while, but I hope I'll be able to keep up :)
Just out of curiosity, where will the ride finish?

    • Bea

Hi Maggie, I'm sure you'll be fine. You're a strong cyclist and now you have your super new bike! It's a loop so it will start and finish at London Bridge.

I think there was a recommended gpx that approximated the routes but avoided unpleasant roads and tunnels for when the route was open rather than closed. Will try and dig out for you.
