Lunch in Surrey

Unfortunately, due to adverse weather conditions I had to cancel the weekend ride event. I couldn't be asked to be drenched in water again or even taking that risk!! However, being my last free weekend before our German Tour I decided to give it a go to a day ride.

I would very much like to continue exploring Surrey/Sussex, areas of never-ending beauty. I will be heading towards Haslemere although may not get quite as far. The idea is to do a circular route touching some of the most scenic tracks these counties have to offer. Pubs are to be found at every mile of the ride so I suggest we have lunch at about 2/3pm when we should have covered about 50/60 miles of our loop.

I will be aiming at an 80ish miles route with moderate elevation. Expect hills but with them will come the jaw-dropping landscape of this part of England.

Weather forecast is super but being too late to revert to the original weekend event we will now fully enjoy this day ride. Plans have slightly changed...for the better. Trains lines are permitting bikes on board which is great news as I'd rather spend 20 miles cycling in Surrey/Sussex than waste them getting out and into London. With that in mind the plan is as follows:

*We meet at 8.45am at Clapham Junction (outside next to Sainsbury on St Johns Hill). 8.55am we will be buying our tickets to Surbiton (it will cost us about £2 each with group savers) and 9.06am we'll catch the train. It's a 20mins journey.

*The ride will be from Surbiton to Redhill and will go along some of the most beautiful roads I have cycled lately including beautiful Bridge Road in WeyBridge (we will have to stop for a group picture there!), Basingstoke Canal (only a couple of miles), the area around Haslemere/Godalming, and finaly Ockley and it's beautiful Weare St.

*From Redhill we have trains to London Victoria and London Bridge for our return journey.

*The ride is about 77miles with some hills but the maximum gradient is just under 8% and the maximum elevation is 472ft. The pace is the usual 15mph average (faster on flats slower uphill) but if you get too far behind then you will have to continue on your own. There will be many train stations en route but you may want to bring a Smartphone just in case.

*Lunch will be at the nicest pub we can find at about 50miles into the ride.

With the 29 degrees forecast I can only predict a brilliant day in our bikes!

Before you hit the RSVP please note the following DO's and DON'Ts

*You won't be allowed to ride with us without a helmet

*If you do not show up you will be blocked from the group.

*If you can't keep up with our pace you will be asked to bail out and you will kindly be asked to make your own way back to London.

*I do not charge for Meet Ups. Just make sure you bring some cash to cover your lunch.

Start: We meet 8.45am outside Clapham Junction and the ride will start promptly at 9am.

Route: This will be a long day in our bikes (80ish miles) with moderate elevation and hills to be expected. We will have lunch at about 55/60 miles at the first beer garden that we spot. You should feel happy and confident riding for about 10 hours at a sometimes demanding 15mph.

Stops: Probably one before and after lunch plus the hour long lunch stop. This is with the exception of loo or mechanical stops.

What to bring: Road (or hybrid bike) in roady condition; snacks and water to refuel regularly; water/wind proof gear; spare inner tube(s), pump, some cash, mobile phone and a Helmet. I'd suggest you also bring lights for your ride back home.

Return to London: This will be a circular route starting and ending at Clapham Junction.

Weather: This ride will go ahead with drizzle and light rain. I will however cancel the event if the forecast is of heavy rain and or winds. This may result in last minute cancellations for which I apologise in advance.

"One of the aims of the Cycling group is to appreciate of our natural surroundings, local towns and villages. We hope to minimise our impact by making sure that we are responsible for our litter. Please dispose of all of your litter and snack wrappers carefully".

Evelini, as I've already said, hats off to you. I'm sure that with a road bike you will be at the front of the group. That said, you should still be alright in a shorter ride. Pleasure to have you in the group garota!

The group was great fun, very fast and very helpful (as I had to be "pushed" a few times). Look forward to meeting them again but hopefully in a better bike, so I can keep up with their pace. Totally recommend it.

This ride gets 5 stars from me for the company, the great route, the lunch stop, the great leadership and finally for the weather as we missed the early afternoon thunderstorms.

The ups of this ride were the amazingly beautiful tracks, particularly the last 30 miles; gentle elevation considering we were in Surrey; the lovely pub we spotted for lunch; magical Weare St in Ockley village; an ever so fast pace and the company as usual. However, there were some downs though due to some glitches in the mapping for which I sincerely apologise. Therefore I'm rating this ride with a 4. Nonetheless, all in all it has been a fantastic day in our bikes.

Peeps, if you are coming by train you might find it easier meeting us at Platform 11 for the 9.06 train to Surbiton. I will however, be waiting for those of you who cycle outside the station from 8.45am to 8.55am.
Also, I have uploaded an extra file Redhill-Clapham Junction in case some of us feel like going the extra mile (19 actually)! Our reward for the effort would be a stop at Fanny's Farm where we can indulge in a well deserved carrot cake and cup of tea! http://fannysfarmshop.co.uk/

Hi guys, I suggest you top up your Oyster Pay as you Go. Clapham Junction to Surbiton will cost £2.30 with Oyster. Surbiton is Zone 6. Michael, you have the GPX. I think the new route passes through Waltham on Thames station so I will txt you when we board the train so that you can meet us at the station.
PLEASE bring two bottles of water, it will be very hot/sunny tomorrow so we will have to take extra care to keep hydrated.

Hi Bea, really looking forward to sunday. It will be my first time cycling with the group and I hope not to dissapoint. Can you please send a message with your mobile just in case something happens on sunday morning? I have received your email and I will be on time, especially now that we have a train to catch, but as I said, just in case... Thanks x

Hey Michael, I have two routes in mind. Both pass less than 1/2 a mile from Waltham on Thames. I'll confirm route details on Friday/Saturday.
