Maryland Fly-In and Presentation by MIT on Using Drones to Deliver Vaccines

Let's get together and fly as a community at Davis Airport. All experiences levels are welcome. Flying will commence at 2pm.

We will also have a presentation on using drones to deliver vaccines to remote areas of the developing world. Andrew Warren, who will be presenting, is part of a team that won $100,000 from the Gates Foundation to do this work and he will be briefing us on his team's progress. You can read more details about their work by clicking here. Come at 1pm if you are interested in being part of this discussion.

Had a great time seeing everyone again. Here's my video from the event:

Thanks to all who worked so hard to make this fly-in yet another success . . . Tim, Chris, the good folks at Davis Airport, and anyone else that had a hand in it. Even the dreary, cool weather couldn't dampen the spirit of this fast growing group (good grief . . . 700+)! I thoroughly enjoyed the community spirit of the day. Good to see everyone!

As first time visitor from the aerostat balloon world I was mightily impressed with the kind, giving atmosphere of this quickly emerging DCADU group. Inspiration vaccine presentation by MIT student Andrew. Highlight was casual respectful interaction between Cessna Pilot and 5 drones sharing the same runway. Light years ahead of the FAA.

I've been reading up on the copter.ardupilot site on how to attach and set up my GPS/compass. Their instructions say to make sure the arrow on the module is facing forward. I have the group-buy Crius GPS unit (CN06 V2.0 GPS) and I can't find an arrow on it. Also, I assume I need to mount the unit component side down (green breadboard down). Is there an arrow on the unit? Or is one of the sides assumed to be forward? Thanks.

The barometer is used for alt-hold. You have to cover the barometer (its on the apm) with something breathable so the wind does not effect it. I believe I used some double sided tape, cut a square hole in the middle, filled the middle with a tiny bit of cotton, then fabric tape on top. I'll be at the meetup tomorrow if you need some help.

Thanks for the advice. I ordered an APM case but they weren't in when I was at the last build party (Chris has them now). I assume the case will serve as a barometer cover? I can't make the fly in today but appreciate the help - there is no shortage of questions here!

At Davis the current weather is great for drone flying. Winds: Calm
    Cloud ceiling: 900'AGL
    Temp: 55 degrees

I have a girls robotics event tomorrow at the same time so I am unable to attend. Will the MIT presentation be inside or out? If feasible, will it be recorded?

Anyone have experience with an APM that won't power up when the battery is plugged in?

I love your questions, Dennis, am at a similar stage so getting great insights with your problems. I hope you'll be at Davis this weekend, you should be an expert by then to help me (:

My boy's team won the league football championship last weekend (proud papa) and the award lunch is 2pm on Saturday so I won't make the fly-in. :(. Troubleshooting is a great teaching tool - I'm glad we have helpful experts in the club to mentor us.

For those of you waiting for APM cases, I have them in stock now. I will bring them to the fly-in.

I changed my hex copter from a "+" to an "x" configuration. Do I need to move the motor connectors on the APM (the arrow on the APM used to point to motor #1 when it was in the "+" configuration but the diagram on shows the arrow pointing between motors #3 and #5). Does it know which motor is which from the APM pin connectors (where each motor is plugged in) or does it assign numbers to motors dynamically when the compass is calibrated? The copter used to fly before I changed it from a "+" to an "x". All I did was move the APM arrow a little to the right so it points between motors #1 and #4 and recalibrated the compass. Now all it does on takeoff is flip over on its side. Thoughts?

      You are quite welcome Dennis!

I rewired the drone using the order in the copter.ardupilot instructions. Started up the ardupilot planner software to configure it. When I plugged in the drone battery I couldn't get the APM to power up - totally dark. After a couple battery disconnect/reconnects it still wouldn't power up. I put motor wires back in the "+" configuration that I originally started with and tried to power up again. Nothing. Dead in the land. :(
