I currently have a Futaba T6EXAP 6-channel controller, was used to control the Eagle 2 RC plane. Would that work with the hexacopter drone kit, or do I need to invest in a new one?

I think it could work but the radio is a bit outdated. It uses the old 72mhz band, you can still use that band but the antennas are really big. These days most radios use the 2.4ghz band.
Your biggest problem is not that it's 72mhz but that you only have six channels to work with. You can get by with six channels but eight is better for a quad.
Some people have hacked your radio to use a FrSky 2.4ghz module:

Thanks for the info. While I still don't know how in depth the Channel/function add ons or defaults go, I was hoping to use it on a Hexacopter, so that might mean I need to get something new. Again, thanks for telling me what you know.
