Andy Thomson, Why We Believe in God(s)

  • Jan 26, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • Jewish Primary Day School (JPDS)

This event is hosted by Machar, a fellow DC Coalition of Reason group.  I have never heard Thomson speak but many of my friends have and he comes highly recommended.  This is also a topic that is very important to any understanding of what is going on with belief.  I plan to be there and my guess is that many of our group will enjoy this one.  The blurb provided by Machar follows.

Don Wharton

Andy Thomson is a psychiatrist in Charlottesville, Virginia, a Trustee of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, and the author of Why We Believe In God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith. We now know why and how human minds generate, consume, and spread religious beliefs. Science has illuminated the ways human minds create gods and submit to religious beliefs. Some of the groundbreaking research was done at our National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.  One of the best unkept secrets is that we have the crucial foundation of a comprehensive psychological science of religious belief. Like Darwin's theory of natural selection, this knowledge requires no specialty training in science.

There is plenty of street parking on Sunday mornings.  There will be bagels, coffee cakes, coffee and juice.
