In honor of Black History Month, BloomScreen and the Africa World Now Project present a modern day fable which cleverly examines the issues of cultural identity, faced by people of African descent… The screening will be followed by audience discussion and Q&A hosted by Mwiza Munthali, host of the radio show "Africa Now," on WPFW 89.3FM. *Suggested Donation: $10. Proceeds support both the Africa World Now Project and BloomBars. Free organic popcorn. Pieces of Identity (Pièces d'identités) (1998, 97 min), by Mweze Ngangura - the fable of an old African king and his wayward daughter is updated to present day, as Mani Kongo, the venerable king of the Bakongo, sets out alone on a quest for his long-lost daughter, Mwana, who left for Belgium, years earlier to study medicine. As soon as he enters Westernized society, the king finds himself faced with, not only the prejudices rampant in European society, but also the loss and bureaucratic theft of artifacts which are the semblances of his traditions and cultural identity. (In French with English subtitles). ( ) Directions: The location is 7 minutes walking distance from the Columbia Heights METRO Station , and a couple of local parking garages - Target and Giant.

What we're about

Public Group

Are you interested in Black Cinema or Media of the African Diaspora? Have you wanted ever wanted to watch and discuss films with other people who share your interest? The DC Black Film & Media Club (BFMC) seeks to unite people in the DC-Metropolitan area to watch and discuss current or past films with a focus on black cinema. Whether you're involved in the film world or a just a film enthusiast like myself, you can hang out and enjoy flicks with new people!

Our group is very democratic and we don't rely on a single organizer to suggest every event.

The group is open to all members to post events to the page! But, if you post an event, you must also agree to act as host.

You only have to 1) Post the details on our Meetup page; 2) Greet other members before the event; and 3) Have an informal discussion at the end of the event.

Hosting is easy, fun... and we get to watch all the films that we love, and hang out together as a real group! We hope you enjoy our 100% democratic format, and get into the spirit by hosting events, not only in theaters, but in your homes, churches and other venues all over the DC Metro area!

We are excited to have you, as part of our group, and we can't wait to "See You at the Movies!" If you have questions, feel free to contact me: (202) 255-1005, or
