With a probing, hand-held camera and an instinctive feel for the throbbing pulse of his native Bogotá, director Juan Andres Arango Garcia brings La Playa DC, a coming-of-age story set in the culturally vibrant, turbulent city of his youth. The sounds of local hip-hop pour from the streets as Tomas, a young Afro-Colombian barber's apprentice, tries to locate Jairo, his younger brother, who has recently disappeared. His search compels him to face his past and leave aside the influence of his brothers to find his own identity. Through a social-realist lens, Arango portrays the complexities of identity politics in contemporary Latin America and produces a fresh portrait of the largely misrepresented Bogotá and its inhabitants, affirming the possibility for youths to find their way.
