Socialist Salon is DSA's monthly forum to discuss the politics, economics, theory, and practice of democratic socialism. Come to Socialist Salon and share your insights! Socialist Salon Monthly Discussion Forum is generally held on the Third Thursday of the month.
The topic for this month will be:
Gender and Socialism
The struggle of workers and women has always been linked. In this salon, we will explore this relationship along with the ways that socialists and feminists have worked with and against each other. Drawing from diverse socialist, feminist and queer liberationist material, we will hopefully gain a broad understanding of ways to fight capitalism and patriarchy at the same time.
Here are the materials for the salon. These texts form a good foundation for the topics we will discuss, and are remarkably relevant 40 years after their publication:
1) Chicago Women's Liberation Union, Hyde Park Chapter; Socialist Feminism: A Strategy for the Women's Movement (1972)
A great primer for socialist feminist theory and practice. You only need to read the first section to get the idea, I highly recommend reading the rest of it too.
2) Zero Collective; Anarchism/Feminism (1970)
A concise description of the relationship between feminism and non-hierarchical socialism.
3) Mario Mieli; Towards a Gay Communism (1977)
A great text that dissects the relationship between gender roles and capitalism, and much more besides. Also a fabulous window into the queer liberation movement as it was before the HIV epidemic. The introduction can be skipped for the sake of brevity
