Let's do some challenging hike before the Thanksgiving feast.
This hike is for endurance and climbing training. You can chose 9.4 miles shorter route if you never hiked more than 9 miles. Other shorter options (14-15 miles) are available too. Please bring a map with you. So I can show you the bailout route on the map.
We will climb the Robertson Mountain and Corbin Cabin Cutoff (CCC) trail. Heading back from AT passing the Stony Man and Corbin Hollow trail.
Water source: Near Corbin Cabin about 9-10 miles and at the Corbin Hollow trail around 17 miles.
Trail head: Old Rag lower parking lot.
Trail head parking lot:[masked], [masked]; State Rte 600/Nethers Rd, Sperryville, VA
Total mileage for longer route: 21-22 miles.
Total elevation gains: 4700+/-
Difficulty level: 4 out of 5 (strenuous; rocky steep trail).
Shorter mileage option: 9.4 miles. Only hike Robertson Mountain, coming back from Corbin Hollow trail.
1. 1.7 miles of very steep 1700 ft climbing to Robertson Mountain summit. 1.6 miles climbing up CCC trail.
2. Possible 5-7 water crossings. Hiking poles and water shoes are helpful.
3. Great views at summits of Robertson, Stony Man and Little Stony Man.
6:30am: Meet at East Falls Church Park N Ride lot for carpooling.
8:30-8:40am: Arrive at trail head: Old Rag lower parking lot and begin to hike.
5-6:00pm: back to the Old Rag lower parking lot.
