Thu 8/21 Hands-On: Build a Game, Publish Universal Apps!

Bring your laptop* to follow along to build a fully functional game from start to finish! We'll be using the latest version of Construct 2 to build an HTML5+JavaScript game that will run on any modern web browser, on your smartphone, tablet, laptop/desktop.

Once we're done, you'll learn how to export for and publish to a website. You'll also learn how to export to the new Universal App format, and then publish via Visual Studio 2013 Update 2, for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1.

Come up to Room 3062 at Microsoft's Reston office @ 12012 Sunset Hills Rd., Reston, VA.

Food and refreshments will be served!

* Windows 7 or higher required for Construct 2, Windows 8.1 required for Universal apps

Thanks for sharing the material Shahed. Very informative as usual.

superb presentation. Shahed Chowdhuri was extremely well organized, very articulate, and true to his word: we developed a fully functioning game by the end of the evening. Interestingly, one of the keys to the success of the evening was his slides. The screen shots were quite sharp, the relevant areas clearly outlined in red, and well labeled. In fact, they were so remarkably good that if I ever have to do a presentation like this, I'm going to model my slides on his approach. And, despite the time management challenges of guiding a group of people totally unfamiliar with game development and its associated technology to a successful conclusion, Shahed remembered to engage with the group, answer questions, and reasonably monitor that people were following along. That said, I recommend extending this presentation to 2.5 hours, so that people feel a little less breathless at the end. All-in-all though, a really great learning experience.

Thanks for the presentation and lesson. It's great to know that making a simple game can be possible for ordinary people like me.

Bummed I can no longer attend. I have a scheduled MRI late tomorrow for a stress fracture.

Hope to catch up with a similar meet up in the future!

Should we have anything installed prior to the meetup?

    July 24, 2014

    • Shahed C.

Hi Steve, I'll give everyone time to download and install the free version of Construct 2, but feel free to install it ahead of time, which should only take a minute or so.

As for Visual Studio 2013 Update 2, the download and install takes a really long time, so I won't expect anyone to install VS2013 during class. I'll provide screenshots and show a live demo for those who don't have it installed ahead of time.
