Skills: Route-Finding 101: Map and Compass (all welcome)

Back by popular demand!  People seemed to enjoy this last time.

I'm going to make a habit of offering my route-finding course in the spring and the fall, and this is my spring variant.

We'll meet on Saturday, 5/3, at Little Bennett Regional Park, where we're going to go over the basics of map and compass navigation. You will learn (1) tips for navigating on trail, (2) how to read a topographic map, (3) how to use a compass, (4) how to take and follow a bearing, (5) the basics of walking off trail. Then, in the afternoon, we'll do some of the permanent orienteering courses that the Quantico Orienteering Club has set up in the park. I guarantee you that you'll learn a lot from completing these courses.

Unlike most DC UL events, we're going to charge a small fee for this event since we are really providing instruction. $20 per person. That's a good deal, as we will be giving you quite a lot more instruction than REI does for its $60/$85 basic map and compass course.

Of course, once we're done, we'll head off to the pub somewhere.

Let me know if there are questions.

With any luck, I'm going to try to schedule a route-finding 102 course for the summer, which will involve a weekend in the woods.

Limit to $20.  Refunds up to seven days beforehand!

Thanks everyone for the fun group and the productive course. I have been day-dreaming about route-fining 102, so we'll definitely make that happen! Great times!

    April 29, 2014

    • Michael M.

Only a 20% chance of rain, so that seems okay. There are areas we can shelter under if we need to, but bring your rain gear!

Will Cristina and I be allowed to share a compass? Leave the Garmin GPS in the Car?

      April 25, 2014

    • Michael M.

Brunton and Suunto make good compasses. Get a baseplate model, like this one (http://www.rei.com/pr...). Note the tool-free declination adjustment. I think you will profit more from the course if you each have compasses. No need for a GPS. I may talk a little about them, but that's a separate course.
