LM: GWNF - Duncan and Strickler Knob (~15 miles)

Details

Overview: This is a great hike in the George Washington National Forest with spectacular views and an opportunity to cheer on ultra runners throughout the evening. This one-night trip totals 15 miles and roughly 2600 feet of elevation gain. There will be stream crossings, and the best views require rock scrambles.

Saturday morning at 8:00am, we will meet at the Vienna Metro Station north parking lot. (Look closely for the sign for the North Lot.) After a 2 hour drive (or less), we will park where Duncan Hollow Trail crosses 675, head south on Duncan Hollow Trail and up to Strickler Knob for a mid-day rock scramble. We will then continue back down hill, turning right on Scothorn Gap Trail, then right on Gap Creek Trail to the saddle underneath Duncan Knob. We will set up camp there and then scramble to the top of Duncan Knob for another spectacular view. This will be a 10-mile day, mostly uphill.

That evening and throughout the night, we will have the chance to cheer on runners of Massanutten Mountain Trails 100-miler. Check out their website for more details:
https://www.vhtrc.org/mmt/index.htm

On Sunday, we will head down Gap Creek Trail toward Duncan Hollow Road, turning left and back to the cars. This will be a 5-mile day, mostly downhill.

We will have lunch in Edinburg or Front Royal on our way back, and we should return to the Vienna Metro by 3pm on Sunday.
