Shop Discussion - Show and Tell, Hand Cut Dovetails Demonstration

Featured Skills Demonstration -

Over the past year or so, fellow group member David Morris has been teaching himself hand-cut dovetailing and has volunteered to share his experience with the group. He'll give a presentation on tools and techniques followed by Q&A. Although often considered the "holy grail" of woodworking, dovetailing by hand offers a way to develop and practice basic skills that are used in a wide variety of everyday woodworking tasks.

How we do -

We are still in the process of developing a workable format. Your participation and feedback has been very helpful!  For this upcoming meetup we are thinking of dividing the time into three segments. After 15 minutes of chatting and getting to know each other, we will hold a technical discussion, followed by group show and tell, and finally a skills demonstration. The more experienced members will have a sort of public technical discussion about their current projects, business/client experiences, and present challenges. For an hour after that we will have an open discussion about current projects, past work, and new ambitions. Everyone is encouraged to bring in pieces they have made, works in progress, or clippings from a magazine if you haven't yet made anything - any prop which helps you to share your ideas. The skills demonstration as you see above will be David's hand cut dovetails.

Looking forward to hearing from you~

I was wondering if the shop had a lathe & if so if there was the possibility of having an introductory class on its use.

Yes it does, but I wouldn't consider it safe for the public.

James and David; sorry to miss this but I don't think I am going to be able to make tonight work. Good luck with the dovetails.

Hi all, I look forward to our session tonight. I'll begin my dovetail presentation no later than 7:30, or earlier if everyone is there already.

Been thinking about freeform angle cuts like the rising dovetails that we shied away from. I have some sample joints to show when we meet next. It sort of ties into
