German Film Director Werner SCHROETER in ITALIA

Werner Schroeter (1945~2010)

Opera, theater, and film director Werner Schroeter resists easy classification. Linked with the new German cinema—the rebellious group of directors who hoped to revitalize postwar film culture — Schroeter's edgy romanticism kept him on the margins. His early film-works demonstrate "a taste for Italian culture".

IL FILM: PALERMO or WOLFSBURG

1980, In Italian and German with English subtitles, 175 min.

WINNER Golden Bear @ The Berlinale - Berlin International Film Fest
Palermo or Wolfsburg (German: Palermo oder Wolfsburg) is a 1980 film by Werner Schroeter. It tells the story of an Italian immigrant who goes to former West Germany in search of work.

Young Nicola leaves his home in Sicily to seek a fortune in the European industrial north, finding employment at a Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, "a land without light, without sun, without song." Humiliation and isolation eventually drive him to settle some scores in this far-off and stressful place, culminating in the film's surreal final act.

One of the best of the New German Cinema films to depict complex cultural differences through tales of the guest worker (Gastarbeiter), Palermo oder Wolfsburg was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlinale.

Olaf Moller writes: "Palermo oder Wolfsburg is Schroeter at his artistically most complex, all-embracing and all-encompassing—just marvel at the way the film begins on a quasi-early Viscontian note to end like Sirk at his most tempestuously mournful and Bene at his most somber... With a meditation on choices and attitudes, positions political and aesthetic, it quite befits its subject: the Passion of the Sicilian migrant worker in the holy land of capitalism, West Germany at its most social democratic."
