iGem Collaboration Planning Meeting

Post #: 2

As I also mentioned yesterday, I've been in contact with both the
President and Public Relations Officer from our very own University of
Toronto iGem team, and they are both super excited about an idea for
possible collaboration projects/events.

(For those who aren't familiar with iGem, it is a hugely popular
synthetic biology competition entered by teams of students around the
world --

They would like to have a meeting as soon as next week to start
discussing some ideas! Time options given were:

. Monday after 17:00
. Tuesday after 15:00
. Thursday before 13:00

I have created a doodle poll for maximum efficiency of syncing
schedules with interested parties:

Time Poll

As this is rather soon, they have just asked that we solidify a
date/time by Sunday afternoon. If you would much rather aim for
something the week after, just leave a note in the comments and I'll
definitely ask about that possibility. (Note that the week of Feb. 10
and 17 would both be unavailable due to both Reading Week and the
traditional Pre Reading Week Hectic Scramble.)

If you can't or just don't feel like making it, but would like some
input, please leave comments in this thread anyway and they'll
definitely be passed on.

Just to be clear, this is not going to be a lab tour or otherwise
recreational meet-up, but is mostly administrative and for those who
wish to have an active participation in the planning and development
of an event.

My preference would be for the week following if possible. thx for taking this initiative. really keen to help support these folks and put them in the spotlight.

Hi all,

Meeting has been confirmed for tomorrow (Monday January 28) @ 17:00 (5:00 PM). We will start off in the front entrance to the Gailbraith engineering building which is at 35 St. George Street. The iGem PR and Outreach representatives will be meeting us @ 5, so it might be helpful to be around ~5 minutes earlier so we can all recognize each other and not miss anyone! I will have a backpack with a "FREE BYRON" pin on the front, can't miss it :)

See you!

I'm held up with some work. If I can make it a bit later does anyone have a cell I can reach them on?

The iGem contacts have followed up on our meeting with the following responses:

. They are not able to collaborate with us on a Nuit Blanche DIYbio
art project, as we suggested (deadline for applications is February
15, if anyone else is interested in pursuing this)

. They would like to invite us to the University for a talk on
synthetic biology, at any time that works for us (they asked for a
general idea of our preferred availability)

. They may or may not let one or more individuals from the group
participate in some of their training workshops; they will get back to
us with more information about this closer to the dates after they've
examined the state of their resources

I'll update everyone as soon as I hear anything else. For now, could
we decide when we would like to schedule this talk?

I'm keen for a DIYbio Nuit Blanche event. Maybe we can talk about it further on Thursday?

Agree. thursday is off for me, but keep on the loop. maybe something fun that make us visible but that has some educational value ? a mini-workshop maybe?
