Don’t remember much from high school biology? What you do remember seems light-years behind where biology is today?
Join us as we go through Herron & Freeman's Evolutionary Analysis (https://www.amazon.ca/Evolutionary-Analysis-5th-Jon-Herron/dp/0321616677/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461334313&sr=8-1&keywords=Evolutionary+Analysis+%285th+Edition%29). We're going to be working through the book, working together to improve our knowledge of biology!
Every month, we read one chapter and discuss it at the meetup. This month is Chapter 1, "A Case for Evolutionary Thinking: Understanding HIV". Next month will be 1 & 2. July will be 1, 2 & 3, which should give everyone lots of time to purchase the book and get reading before we move out of the introductory chapters (which are short in general). We'll be answering the questions at the end of the chapter as a group; that's the main activity of the meetup. If you haven't read the chapter, you're still welcome to attend and learn with us!
We also pick a recent scientific article to talk about (TBA, stay tuned), and have a general wide-ranging discussion of molecular biology / synthetic biology / DIYbio in the news.
