DIYbio 101: Making Bacteria Glow

Location image of event venue

Want to use the DM Community Lab but don't know where to start? Don't worry, we have you covered! We're rolling out a new series of 101s aimed at equipping you with all the skills you need to conduct your own experiments.

This month we'll learn how to perform bacterial transformation. This is the process of taking genes from one organism and inserting them into another. Here, we'll be taking bioluminescent genes from one species of bacteria and inserting them into a common lab strain of E. coli to make it glow in the dark.

Ages: 12 years old* - adult
*children under 16 must be accompanied by a _participating_ adult
