What we're about

The founders are a number of MeetUp regulars who play social badminton on a Monday evening at Berkhamsted leisure centre. This will continue, but if there is sufficient interest and support we will look at additional sessions, possibly also at Hemel Hempstead leisure centre and other venues, and other racket sports such as tennis, table tennis and squash.

New members are of course welcome to join our merry crowd – that’s partly why we’ve set up this MeetUp group – and to keep us on our toes as we are getting to know our opponents too well! However, whilst we cannot expect you to come every week (we can’t either) we would expect to see you at some point, even if you just dip in and out. The group is limited to 50 to take advantage of reduced MeetUp fees, so if you haven’t been for a long time you may need to make way for someone who is keen to play.

If you have never picked up a racket before, want competitive matches or to play in a league, then this isn’t for you. Beyond that, it doesn’t matter what standard you are, and you can always come along and give it a trial for one week as my guest – just message me through MeetUp.

It’s not all play though. Sometimes we go to the pub afterwards, and now we have our own MeetUp group feel that this ought to happen more regularly - and maybe have the occasional get-together where we don’t lift a racket!

You are welcome to organise and host your own event, even just to book a court/table and see who else wants to come along, provided it doesn’t clash with anything already on the programme. Several of us are event hosts on other MeetUp groups so can help with that.

Tuesday Evening Badminton - Leighton Buzzard - 8PM

Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre

NB - Note different time and new(ish) venue! See below if event appears full. There is still limited availability for Badminton, but I have managed to book a court at Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre on the outskirts of Leighton Buzzard. All levels and new players welcome. The rules and restrictions are getting quite complicated now, and the centre has its own rules to add to the confusion. However, we will be complying with Government and Centre rules, and following the guidance published by Badminton England who have worked closely with Government and key agencies: - So far I have only booked one court for 4 people (the maximum the centre will allow on a court). - If another 4 people are interested (through comments on the event page) I will see if another court is available, and book it. To comply with the "rule of six" and centre rules there will be no mingling between the courts, nor before or after play. - Both singles and doubles can take place in groups of people from different households, as long as you remain 2 metres apart as far as possible; - If social distancing between adjacent courts cannot be maintained, you should use the singles court markings; - Stay 2 metres away from other participants before and after play, and during breaks; Please bring your own racquet as these are not for hire at present. If you can no longer attend at any time before the event commences, please change your RSVP to "No" so that any latecomers might be able to attend if the event is shown as "full". If you cancel before 10:00am on the day of the event a refund will be made (less 20p which is retained by PayPal).
