What we're about

Dads in Distress (DiDs) is a place for Dads experiencing tough times (e.g., parenting stress, separation, etc.) to meet face to face with other Dads to talk, have a yarn, connect, and get/give support.

If you would prefer to attend online meetings or meetings in other locations in Australia, go to https://www.parentsbeyondbreakup.com/dids

(This is a public site for announcing meetings. If you are in distress now, call 1 300 85 3437. If you are on the Gold Coast and want to talk to someone locally, call Steve on 0414 304 243. If you are looking to chat online, join "DiDs Virtual Verandah" at https://mewe.com - https://mewe.com/group/5e6711a45b572856ff4efa1d)

DiDs along with its sister organisation Mums in Distress (MiDs) are a part of the national Parents Beyond Breakup (https://www.parentsbeyondbreakup.com/pbb/contact) organisation that supports separating parents and their children.

Relationship breakup is hell. Especially if there are kids. There are multiple traumas to negotiate.

Dads typically have to first negotiate the emotional trauma of separation from their partner. About 70-80% of breakups are initiated by women (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-new-resilience/201508/women-initiate-divorce-much-more-men-heres-why). Many Dads report that her decision "came out of the blue": "I was blindsided", "I never saw it coming".

Then, the parents have to renegotiate contact with their children (typically the Dads more than Mums). In the initial stages, it is not unusual for men to agree to move out of the family home, and/or to be on the receiving end of a domestic violence order, all of which can seriously disrupt contact between Dad and his children.

After negotiating all of that, the couple then have to divide whatever net wealth has been accumulated, and decide who gets what.

And then they get to restart their lives from there.

The process is awful.

DiDs is a place where Dads can express what they feel - and many say they feel ashamed, shocked, frustrated, angry, powerless, etc.

However, the BIG concern that DiDs addresses is that many men do not express themselves in a constructive way at all. Men's go-to expressions are silence, aggression, and sometimes sadly, suicide.

So come to DiDs to express yourself, be heard, and start the rebuild.

Gold Coast Dads in Distress meeting (weekly)

Palm Beach Neighbourhood Centre

We are a group of fathers that meet weekly to talk, have a yarn, connect, and support each other as we negotiate tough times. We each have our own story, but it is amazing how much each story overlaps with the experiences of others: "her way or the highway", parental alienation, court procedures, false allegations of abuse/violence, financial struggles, etc.

Here is a place to share your experiences, and learn from the experiences of others.

It's free. You can just listen. Or express yourself and be heard. And begin the rebuilding of your life.
