  • Practical Ethics by Peter Singer (The latest book by one of the most significant and controversial living ethicists)

Also Justice by Michael Sandel of Harvard. Was also a series on PBS and was reported as one of Harvard's most popular courses. Some say Michael Sandel is the next John Rawls.

As nice as the Theory of Justice sounds, being over 600 pages puts it way out of contention unfortunately.
