Regardons 'Le Comte de Monte Cristo' (2002)

The beautiful classic tale by Alexander Dumas, shortened to fit into 2.25 hours.  This is a highly-rated version, lauded by critics and general viewer rating 7.6/10 on IMDb.  Both Pearce and Caviezel play their roles well as former friends and later enemies.  Will screen in French with English subtitles.

Set in Marseille and Paris, France, the story features Edmond Dantes falsely imprisoned by his jealous "friends," later learning from a priest in prison and escaping, becoming powerful enough to exact revenge.  It's the story of the battle within to overcome suffering and injustice, to find peace in one's soul by letting go of bitterness and anger.

This version is well-done.  While the earlier 1998 miniseries starring Gérard Depardieu is also excellent and even more true to Dumas' book - if not more complex and difficult to follow - it is over 6 hours long and not fitting for a Meetup event.  We would have to find several slots that everyone could attend.  This 2002 production will be screened in French with English subtitles.
