Tax exempt status of Atheist organizations

Is there any precedent for an Atheist organization applying for (or being granted) tax exempt status by the IRS?

Yes, lots.

It's easy to get tax exemption if your organization has some non-profit humanitarian motive, e.g. Foundation Beyond Belief (

However, there is also precedent for tax exemption simply for being a group of non-believers.

Check out . Fellowship of Freethought Dallas incorporated as a non-profit with the state of Texas and was recently approved for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS. The organization has to follow the rules of non-profits, such as not actively campaigning for political candidates or lobbying.

Of course churches no longer adhere to the concept of no political campaigning or lobbying, since they invite the candidates of their choice to deliver speeches and they openly favor some candidates and/or excoriate others.

My preference: eliminate the tax deduction for religious organizations, to the extent their expenses are not directly related to charitable work. Of course that will fly - like a pig.
