Speaker's Boot Camp: How to Propose, Plan, and Present at Industry Events

It is an honor to speak at an industry event. This speaker's boot camp shows you how to submit, prepare, and delivery a talk that people will remember. When you deliver a talk that resonates, you can be capitulated into a thought leader, writer, keynote speaker, and more. The harsh reality of speaking at these events include:

• Many submitted topics are never chosen.

• Most speakers have not spent time preparing.

• Slides look like "death by bullet points."

• Speakers use inappropriate images, language, or videos.

• Some talks sound like sales pitches.

• A joke goes horribly wrong with an audience.

• Speakers do not deliver key content in a timely manner.

• Some speakers do not show up.

In this workshop, Brian Sullivan (Founder, Big Design Conference) and J. Schuh (Co-Founder, Industry Giants Conference) share their secrets of successful presenters and quality presentations. In this workshop, you will learn:

•  How to avoid the hurdles of submitted your proposal

• Ways to tailor your talk to the audience

• Tips and tricks to speed up your research

• Discover ways to structure your slides to make them more compelling

• Proven methods to engage your audience

•  Ways to make your talk resonate after you deliver it

• How to manage the social media channel before and after your talk

• Methods to strengthen your brand and attract new followers

By adopting these proven strategies, you will increase your chances of being selected and remembered, rather than rejected and forgotten.

Fantastic information on how organizers think, and how an aspiring speaker should think.

Only thing it lacked was a workshop. I wanted to spend the rest of the day hacking on my title and short description, but otherwise the talks were spot-on!

Wanted to restate though - I LOVED the format. I really appreciated Brian's 'reality check' and the 'how tos' and 'how NOT tos'. Copious notes were taken from all the presenters!

The Bootcamp was excellent! Great job by Adam, Keith, Brian, and J. (as well as anyone else who contributed to it). To Natasha's point, if it does get offered again, it will most likely be even better as they incorporate anything they learned from this iteration.

I am so sorry that I missed this, but my VP was in town. Will this course be offered later this year?

I had the same problem. It's at the very back of the Village on the Parkway off of Belt Line.

Sorry, I had to change. I didn't realize it was at 9 AM and I work from 5:30 to 4 PM.

Yowzer. 530AM to 400PM is a big shift. I would need a nap at lunch, after work, or both!

    • Eric S.

Yeah, we're doing a lot of mandatory overtime lately. And a nap certainly sounds good around hour nine.

I am sorry that I will not be able to attend... I'll be in NYC.

We will try to have fun without you! But, Keith Anderson has assured me it is too hard to do.

People interested in this may also be interested in a presentation I made with Megan Mead of Creative Suitcase (and Austin-based Communication Design firm) called "How Not 2 Suck at Presenting Your Work," which we gave to TWO audiences totaling ~1,000 people at SXSW last year, and as part of AIGA DFW's DESIGN: BIG WEEK last September and as part UNT's Graduate Level Professional Readiness Lecture Series last November.
