Winterizing Your Flock

If you missed the last winterizing class, here's your chance to get some great info and have some fun with other chicken enthusiasts. Come visit with Jeff Raska from A&M AgriLife Extension Service to learn what to do (and not to do) to get your backyard flock ready for the colder months ahead! Jeff will address general chicken info as well as housing, bedding, feeding, healthcare and choosing the best breeds for the backyard flock.

A Q&A session will follow the presentation. The class is free but we need a proper headcount for planning purposes.

Be sure to share with all your friends and those that are interested in raising backyard chickens - and keeping them happy and healthy through the winter!

Afterwards, at 3:30, Gecko will host the Backyard Chicken Holiday Party. Bring some yummy people treats to share if you can (in a recyclable container). Gecko will provide beverages.

Thanks to everyone who attended yesterday and especially Jeff Raska. He is such a fun and informative speaker. We will remember to turn the music down a bit the next time. Happy Holidays to all in backyard chicken land!!!

Had a great time, even though I've had chickens for a while I still picked up so good pointers & learned more about why we do some things we do.

Great way to get expert advice on raising chickens.
One small suggestion for the Gecko store...if you could turn down the piped in music during the education session that would appreciated. It was difficult to hear the speaker. And he is so good that you don't want to miss a word! :-)

We are at the corner of Northwest Highway and Ferndale, between Plano Rd. and Audelia. We are back in the shopping center near Albertsons.

Super easy to find Leo! Right on Northwest Highway by the Chase Bank and Albertson's on the North East side of the road!

Since we are in the beginning of an extreme cold front now that will last for a week or more, is there something we can do for now that will help our birds? Mine do not want to come out of the coop. Am I wrong to have a heat lamp in the coop? Any advice would help. Thank you.

That's perfect. Usually they will do fine during the day. It's the night chill that can cause problems.

I tried out one of the ceramic bulbs which doesn't put out any light and that worked really well in their coop, keeping it above freezing during the worst of it. We also blocked off one side of the run so they were sheltered from the wind and ice.

Just too far for me, this time. I own Sunrise Farm Hatchery, just east of Austin. I know a good bit about tending chickens, however, when you get out, you meet wonderful people and no matter how smart you think you are, you always learn more.
